Defensive Game

Purpose: To work on, develop, and improve on-ball defensive skills.  The defender is rewarded for preventing a basket in a competitive situation.

Drill: All the defensive players start under the basket and the offensive players start at spot 1 (see diagram).  The first defender in line starts the drill by rolling the basketball to the offensive player in the corner at spot 1.

The offensive player should receive the basketball about two steps before the defender closes out.  The offensive player is only allowed 2 dribbles while attempting to score.  If the offense scores, then the defender gets back in the 'defense' line under the basket; the offensive player will move over to the next spot.

An offensive player who does not score goes to the defensive line; a defender who prevents a basket goes to spot 1 (or to whichever spot he left off with on his previous offensive attempt).  A player is finished with the drill after scoring from spot 5.

Option:  The coach can stop the game after the first person wins or it can continue until there is only one player left.  The loser(s) can be given a consequence for losing.  I personally don't make the consequences very severe...just something to ensure the the drill stays competitive and the players stay focused.
