Drive to Jump Stop Layup Drill

1) Purpose: The purpose of this drill is to teach basketball players the proper technique of coming to a two-footed jump stop before shooting a layup.

Drill 1 - Drive Baseline, Jump Stop Layup Drill: The first player in line starts in a corner and drives hard to the basket.  A good jump stop must be executed to shoot the layup.  Rebound the basketball and pass to next person in line (each player could also have his/her own basketball depending upon number of personnel and number of basketballs).  After making the layup, the player goes to the other corner.  Each player repeats the process.  Continue for duration determined by coach.

Coaching Points: Be sure the players come to a two-footed stop, on balance and under control, with shoulders parallel to the backboard.

2) Drill 2 - Drive From Elbow, Jump Stop Layup Drill: The first player in line drives to the basket from the elbow or key area and makes a good jump stop before shooting the layup.  The shooter then rebounds his/her own shot and passes the basketball to the next player in line.  After passing the ball, the shooter goes to the opposite elbow.  The other players repeat the same process for the duration determined by the coach.

Coaching Points: Players must come to a two-footed jump stop, on balance and under control, before shooting.

Variation: As an added enhancement to work on contested layups, have a coach or manager stand at the basket with a blocking pad to cause contact with the shooter.  This helps the shooter work on keeping his or her balance against a defender while also having to shoot versus contact.
