Basketball Fundamentals 101 |
Fundamental Basketball Skill #1 - Running
|
Once the basketball position is learned, the players are now taught running. It must be stated first of all (more will be discussed as you read further) that running in basketball is different than running a 100m or a marathon. Also, as a part of the running aspect for basketball, I also include the skill of backpedaling.
Basketball players will rarely achieve top-speed on the basketball court because they need to stop and start often.

Therefore, the importance of this fundamental is seen in a players ability to quickly transition from offense to defense and vice-versa.
A players speed and quickness is certainly one factor in being able transition quickly, however, basketball is a sport which requires abrupt stops and starts, quick changes of direction, and the combination of a variety of movements. Therefore, a player can greatly enhance his/her running skill by developing the ability to stop and start and change direction quickly. Stops/starts and quick changes of direction are the most important aspect of running that a basketball player must develop.
In running from the basketball position, the emphasis and teaching points are (remember that backpedaling is also considered part of the running fundamental):
- Push off with the back foot (running) and front foot (backpedaling)
- In running forward, utilize a big first stride
- In backpedaling, utilize a short first stride
- Stay low throughout the start (push-off)
- See the ball at all times, whether transitioning to offense or to defense
- Stopping in the basketball position
- More tips and pointers will be found in the drills below
