How to Have an Explosive and Effective Vertical Jump

Purpose: To teach the players how to effectively jump vertically. Follow these principles and techniques to learn to jump effectively, quickly, and efficiently as required by basketball.

How to Jump: The vertical jump is a necessary skill for basketball players. It can be quite advantageous to be able to jump high, but it is also quite essential to be able to jump quickly. By jumping quickly, I am referring to the ability to get off the ground quickly and reach your highest point vertically as fast as possible.

In order to be the best jumper possible, the jump must be practiced by performing 2 types of 'countermovement jumps'; the upright countermovement jump and the basketball position countermovement jump.

The upright countermovement jump is where the jumper begins in an upright position, makes a downward movement by flexing the knees and hips, then immediately and quickly extends the knees and hips to jump vertically off the ground. The basketball-position countermovement jump is where the jumper begins in the basketball position, further flexes the knees and hips slightly, then immediately and quickly extends to jump vertically off the ground.

The countermovement is essential to include in order to get the most vertical out of your jump. Starting in a squat position, without utilizing the downward movement, will not allow you to jump as high as possible. The countermovement allows the muscles to 'pre-load' prior to jump. This pre-load helps the muscles prepare for the upward phase rather than starting out from a low position and requiring the muscles to build up from a stopped state. (Much like how a spring works). More force can be generated by pre-loading the muscles.
