On Ball Check and Recover Drill
| |
Purpose: To teach the defensive players proper techniques for defending an on-ball screen, or pick and roll.
Drill: O1 starts on top with the basketball. O2 starts at the high post. O1 initiates the drill by dribbling off of a high screen set by O2. The defensive player guarding the dribbler must fight over the top of the screen and stay with him. The on-ball defender must get help from teammate X2.
The player defending the screener, X2, must step out high and 'check' the dribbler, then recover to his own player rolling to the basket. It is important to 'check' the dribbler so that he has to dribbler out high in order to get past the screen. If there is no check, X1 will have a more difficult time getting through the screen and O1 will probably have an open lane to the hoop.
The coach may also add another offensive and defensive player on the other elbow so the dribbler can choose which side to go.
