Keys to a Successful Offense

By: Tony Alfonso

It doesn't matter what basketball offense that you run, there are certain keys that I believe are essential if you want to have a smooth and effective offense. If you are a coach, these 19 keys should be taught with practice and drills. If you are a player, these 19 keys should be something that you continually work on to help you become the best offensive team player that you can become.

The following are the 19 essential keys to developing, running, and leading a successful basketball offense.

1. Be in a triple threat position when you receive the ball everywhere on the floor.
Avoid holding the ball over your head.

2. Catch and Face. Whenever you catch the ball, wherever you are on the floor,
turn to your offensive basket.

3. Use Jump Stops! Especially when driving to the hoop. Jump stop, be strong,
and get the defense up in the air with fakes.

4. Read the defense and react accordingly. Move with a purpose.

5. Know how to read the low post defense.

6. Never pass the ball unless you have a good target to throw to. You should see
Triple Wide (Wide eyes, Wide mouth, Wide hands i.e., the target is looking at
you, calling for the ball, and giving a target with his hands). Likewise, if you
want to receive a pass, get triple wide.

7. Pass the ball away from the defense.

8. Use good ball fakes and shot fakes.

9. Make Goldilocks passes. Not too hard, not too soft, but just right!

10. Dribble only for 3 reasons: to improve passing angle, to drive to the hoop, to
get out of trouble. Do not just stand around dribbling -- you are too easy to
defend.

11. Avoid 'dead ball' situations. Do not pick up your dribble without a target in
mind.

12. See and recognize the helpside defense.

13. Be unselfish. Work for the high percentage shot.

14. Set good stationary screens.

15. Use the screens properly. Read your defender to make the proper cut.

16. Be aware of effective reversal and skip passes.

17. Make good hard cuts to get open.

18. Come and meet the pass. Don't let anyone step in between you and the ball.

19. Be patient...there is no need to panic.
