A Hoops U. Basketball DVD Review

The Read & React Offense

Short review (in case you don't like to read much) -- get The Read & React Offense DVD set now!

Why do you need this? The Read & React Offense, designed by Coach Rick Torbett from Better Basketball, is quite simply genius in its simplicity. Now, by 'simple', I don't mean it's dumbed-down or lacking creativity. I mean The Read & React is all about common sense -- basketball sense!

Coach Torbett has designed an offense that lets the players play! No robotic and easy-to-defend set pattern ... no complex or difficult to implement movements! The Read & React Offense is completely adaptable and adjustable to your personnel. The greatest aspect of The Read & React Offense that stands out to me is the idea that it teaches players how to play the game (the basketball sense I mentioned above). Maybe it's just me, but it seems as though there are more players today that simply don't know how to play the game. While it's true they may be more athletic and individually talented, the game is lacking in team play and offensive basketball understanding. Whenever I work with other teams or coach an AAU team, I am always amazed at the amount of time I have to put in just in teaching basic offensive movements and techniques. It is obvious to me that a great number of players learn the game playing in set patterns which require little to no thinking. I suppose since I grew up playing in and learning the motion offense, it was required that we all knew what to do without the basketball, i.e. pass and cut, pass and screen away, how to move with a purpose, how to use a screen, etc. I also know that, as a coach, a motion-style offense can have it's challenges based upon personnel and team basketball IQ. This is where the brilliance of The Read & React Offense really shines through.

The Read and React Offense, in a sense, simplifies the motion offense. Actually, it simplifies any type of offense! Again, it simplifies offense with a common sense approach. Players read what the ball is doing and react to it. It 'simplifies' your offensive approach by limiting the possible reactions. For example, if you are away from the ball in a motion offense you have to decide what to do based not only on the basketball, but on what each of your other teammates doing (should I cut now, should I screen now, should I wait for a screen and so on). In The Read & React Offense, you really only need to react to the basketball and base your decision on what the ball is doing and where it is going. Again, your decision is simply common basketball sense.

Coach Torbett teaches this system with 17 layers; techniques based on ball movements and defensive situations. Another phenomenal aspect of The Read & React Offense is that you can run it to fit your personnel, whether 5-out, 4-out, or 3-out. And beyond your desired setup, The Read & React allows you to emphasize the type of offense you desire. For instance, your offense can be based on passing and cutting, screening (even 2- and 3-man staggered screens, backscreens, flare screens, etc) dribble-drive penetration, or post play dominant. Whatever your offensive philosophy and personnel, The Read & React will help your offensive success! How so? Remember, The Read & React Offensive System teaches your players how to play the game of basketball, not how to move in set or chaotic patterns!

The Read & React Offense can also be run against man-to-man defenses or zone defenses. Think about that -- you only need to install one offense, no matter what your personnel or what the defense may throw at you! It is also obvious to me that The Read & React Offense can be run at any level, youth to high school to college...even the pros could benefit from this system! If you have a young or inexperienced team, you can simply utilize the aspects you want ... and if you have an experienced and intelligent team, you can install many advanced techniques. You can even incorporate your own creativity and offensive philosophies!

The 6-DVD set is professionally done with on-court demonstrations, animated diagrams and graphics, and numerous drills to help teach the layers and techniques. Coach Torbett takes the time to explain, in detail, The Read & React Offense. He goes through each of the 17 layers in an easy-to-understand manner with a full complement of breakdown drills and 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 on court demonstrations. You also receive a DVD loaded with strategies and ideas to help you incorporate The Read & React system into your program -- basic applications along with advanced tips and techniques. It is also interesting to watch the included interview DVD's with coaches who run The Read & React Offense.

So, if you went ahead and read this entire review, I'll take you back to the first line -- get The Read & React Offense DVD set now!!
