Purpose: To develop dribbling skills under intense pressure.
Drill: All players line up behind the baseline. Place one less basketball than the number of players on the midcourt line (in the diagram shown, there are 6 players and 5 basketballs). Use only the shaded area between the top of the 3-point lines as shown.
On the whistle or command all players attempt to get a ball. The one player who does not get a ball is “IT”. “IT” has :15 seconds to get a ball away from any of the players with a ball. “IT” can get the ball away by either touching a ball, stealing the ball, forcing the dribbler to lose control of his/her dribble, or forcing a dribbler out of bounds.
When the full :15 expires, the player without a ball is eliminated (“IT” may have changed several times during the :15).
The next game begins with one less player and one less ball. Work your way down to two players and one ball.
- Instead of having the eliminated players sit and watch, you could have them work on dribbling skills in an available area of the gym.
- Give the winner a reward (great for camp settings).
- Optional: Place all the balls on the free throw line and use only the area inside the 3-point arc.
