Dr. Tim Elmore has a great post over at his Growing Leaders blog. In What Parents Should Say to Their Kids as They Perform, he talks about what athlete’s really want to hear from their parents. Dr. Elmore also shares from his discussions with student-athlete’s how they feel anxiety, pressure, and stress because of what their parent’s say or do.
The best takeaway from the entire article are the 6 simple words parents should say:
“I love to watch you play.”
Again.
“I love to watch you play.”
If you are ‘one of those’ parents, stop. Quit complaining about coaches and teammates in front of your kids. Stop texting/emailing/calling incessantly to tell the coach how to do his job. Simply enjoy the experience of your son or daughter in his or her sport or activity. Be supportive. Be proud of them. Love them. And love watching them.
