By Wes Kosel

This is the first in a series of 4 flex action plays from Coach Fred Hoiberg when he was at Iowa State. See the other Flex Action plays here: 2-3 Flex Action Staggered Downscreen Option In this flex set quick hitter, the ideal look is getting an open look inside the lane via a curl cut. By Wes Kosel

This is another play from Senegal that they ran during the AfroBasket 2015 tournament (see 1-4 Stagger Away for the other). In this quick hitter, a perimeter hand-off leads into a pick-and-roll with multiple scoring options. 3 screens down for 5. 1 passes to 5. 3 cuts back up the lane line to loop around 5 for a hand-off. 4 sets a ball-screen for 3. 3 drives right looking for 4 on the roll or for 1 in the corner for a shot. … [Read more...]

1-4 Stagger Away

By Wes Kosel

This 1-4 quick hitter basketball play was used by Senegal in the recent AfroBasket 2015 tournament. 1-4 Stagger Away is a great play that utilizes several staggered screens to create open 3-point shot opportunities and/or passes to cutters flashing into the lane. With this one play, multiple scoring chances will arise! This is one of two plays from Senegal during AfroBasket 2015 (see Down Loop Hand Off Play for the other). 1 passes to 3 cutting to the left wing. 1 and 4 set a … [Read more...]

By Wes Kosel

The Zone Double Flash is a quick hitter that begins with both low post players flashing to the high post. Once the ball is received in the high post, there are multiple options available to get an easy scoring opportunity. This is an effective and efficient basketball play that will yield good results. 4 and 5 flash to the elbows. 1 passes to 4. Once 4 has the ball, 2 slides to the corner, 5 dives to the rim, and 1 moves opposite. If 5 or 2 aren't open, 4 passes back out to … [Read more...]

1-3-1 Zone Defense Breakdown

By Wes Kosel

In this series of diagrams, we demonstrate the basics of the 1-3-1 zone defense and how to defend depending on where the basketball is located and also following a specific action such as a skip pass and dribble penetration. Basic Alignment: The goal is to keep 3 players between the ball and the basket. In the intital set-up, x1, x4, and x5 are between the ball and basket. Backside Help and Recover Drill

By Wes Kosel

This is a nice 2-man defensive drill to work on helpside defense as well as recovering. The defenders work at cutting off flashes and passes, while being able to recover to their man. Coach starts with the ball. 2 flashes to the middle of the lane, and X2 must stop the flash. Once the flash is checked, 3 steps in bounds and Coach passes to 4. X1 must drop back to guard the basket, and X2 must step over to cut off 4 penetrating baseline. Once the penetration has been cut-off, X2 … [Read more...]
