The Sideline Advantage Play is an out of bounds play that can be used when inbounding the basketball from the defensive sideline when there are mere seconds left in the game. It is most effective when the defense is playing man-to-man defense with some pressure.
Assuming the opposing team is ahead (or even tied) with about 4-10 seconds left, they will probably apply light pressure so the ball cannot be advanced quickly. This play hopes to use the pressure so we can a numbers advantage on the offensive end. The goal is to get the basketball to the best ballhandler / playmaker so he can make a play to score the ball.
When the official hands the ball to O2, O1 will start the play by setting up his defender toward the middle of the court and then cutting hard back to the sideline. As O1 cuts to the sideline, he will use the screen being set by O3. It is important that O3 looks like a threat to receive the pass so his defender does not automatically attempt to switch to O1.
O1 should cut close to sideline but not too close that he may potentially step out of bounds. He also must be careful to avoid a charging foul in case a defender steps into his path (O2 should also be aware of this possibility so his pass doesn’t create a charge).
O2 must throw a good pass by leading his receiver so O1 can catch ‘on-the-fly’ and quickly dribble up the court.
As O1 receives the pass, O5 will cross the lane to balance the floor. O1 will then bring the ball up the court, looking to attack the lane where he can penetrate and hit the open teammate or create his own shot.
