Purpose: To work on moving without the basketball and getting open by use of a V-cut. Also works on catching and scoring via the shot or dribble.
Drill: Player in corner, passer at top with a basketball. If this is a team drill, have a line in the corner and/or use multiple baskets.
To begin, O1 makes a move to the baseline, pushes off with the foot closest to the baseline and then steps toward the passer to receive the pass.
As O1 catches the ball, he can square and take the jump shot or drive to the basket for a layup.
After shooting, O1 will secure the rebound, return it to the passer and go to the opposite corner to perform drill from that side (or to begin a new line).
If working with a group, as soon as the passer receives the ball, the next player in line should start his v-cut. Continue for desired number of reps per side.
- Emphasize the proper v-cut footwork: pushing off outside foot, keeping low, and moving to the ball with target.
- Make sure they are ready to receive the pass with the hands (hands should be a target, not down at their side).
- When they attempt to drive for the layup, they should be able to do so with 1 dribble. Stress importance of putting ball out in front with a long, hard dribble.
