Purpose: To work on defending the low post on the high or ball side. Develops ability to deny pass into the post as well as defending the low post player from scoring once he does receive the basketball. Also allows offensive players to work on posting up and scoring from the low post.
Drill: One defender and two offensive players needed for this drill. Also need 2-3 coaches/manages/passers.
Player x5 must defend both low post players in this drill (though not at the same time, of course!).
The coach or player at the top starts with the basketball and the defensive player, x5, starts in the middle of the lane. Coach will pass to one side or the other and x5 will defend the low post on that side. x5 should work to stay on ball side of the low post player.
The coaches or passers should look to pass inside to the low post player, but if it is not available, they can pass back to the top or skip it all the way across. x5 should rotate and defend accordingly.
If the pass is made to the low post player, he should attempt to score from a low post move while x5 defends. This should merely be a 1-on-1 situation as the other offensive low post is not involved at this point. The offensive player attempts to score but if unavailable, he can pass back out to a coach.
Continue for desired duration of time or until the offensive player scores or the defender stops him or steals the basketball.
