Purpose: To work on free throw shooting as well as offensive and defensive performance in a 3-on-2 fast break situation.
Drill: A 3-player team lines up to shoot a free throw (one player is the shooter, the other two line up along the lane). A 3-player defensive team also lines up along the lane.
The 3 defensive players on the lane will fast break off either a miss or a make by the free throw shooter. The 2 offensive players on the lane will get on defense. The shooter does not go back on defense.
The teams change roles when coming back down the court.
- Off the made or missed free throw, it’s a fast break situation. The players should push the ball quickly up the court and look to score.
- Make a competitive drill by keeping track of points scored (including free throws) and playing to a certain number of points. Losing team has consequence of push-ups, squat jumps, burpees, etc.
- If keeping track of points scored, shoot the free throws as a 1-and-1 situation. If the shooter makes the first, he gets the second attempt. In a competitive drill, this will put a bit of added pressure on the free throw shooter to make his shots.
