Overview: The fake-and-go is a play to run at the end of a half or game when you need to go the full length of the court and there is only about 2-4 seconds left on the clock. This play gives several options instead of simply throwing a 'hail mary' pass and hoping that it's caught! The Play: This play requires you have a player (O4 in this diagram) that can throw the long baseball pass. It also helps to have two good shooters (O2 and O3) and a big (O5) who will set the screen at … [Read more...]
Box Lob Double
Use this frontcourt, side out-of-bounds play when you will be making the inbounds pass from the key to free throw line area (because of the potential lob pass). This may also be useful in the last seconds of a game, half or quarter. The players will line up in a box set, as shown. O5 and O2 are on the low blocks and O4 and O1 are at the elbows. Ideally, O4 should be a good jumper because of the lob designed for him; if he/she is not a leaper, that may be fine if the backscreen is set and used … [Read more...]
Step-Out Bomb Play
This last second play can be utilized ONLY when following a score when a team is permitted to run the baseline. The 'Step-Out Bomb' play is great to use when the defensive team is desperate to get the basketball and will all-out gamble to get it. It will also only work when all 5 defenders are in a full court man-to-man press. Coaches, make sure to practice this play so that you know which players can play which position. The player making the pass should be skilled at throwing the long … [Read more...]
Full Court 'X' Play
This last second play is one that can be used when there are only a couple of seconds left in a game; about enough time to catch, turn, maybe use a dribble or a quick pass, and a shot. When the official hands the ball to O4, O1 and O2 cross from corner to opposite sideline. O3, just as soon as both players pass, will set a screen for O5, who breaks hard toward the midcourt line. O4 will pass to whoever is open. The best option may be O5 who can catch the ball and pass to either O1 or O2, now … [Read more...]
4 Low Lob
The 4 Low Lob baseline out of bounds play is designed to get a quick shot when time may not even allow for a catch and shoot. The pass may need to be tipped in for a score. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O4 sets a screen for O5 and then rolls back to the basketball, pinning his defender behind him. O5 must set up his defender to the low side and then step high and curl to the front of the rim. O1 looks for O5 on the lob and then to O4 if the defenders switch. The O5 position … [Read more...]
