Purpose: To work on making the outlet pass and filling the lane in a fast break situation. To work on receiving the outlet pass and quickly dribbling downcourt. Also develops a variety of skills necessary for an effective fast break such as passing, jump stops, and finishing.
Drill: Two players on the court with one basketball. O1 starts under basket with the basketball. O2 starts in outlet area.
O1 begins drill by tossing the basketball off the backboard and jumping up to secure the rebound. He quickly pivots and makes the outlet pass to O2. O2 dribbles quickly toward opposite free throw line while O1 sprints wide up the court.
As O2 reaches the free throw area, he comes to a jump stop and makes a bounce pass to O1 for the layup.
O2 runs in to secure the rebound as O1 sprints to outlet area after shooting the layup.
Continue for desired number of attempts or made layups.
- If time & space is at a premium, have the rest of the team under the baseline where you began the drill. As the first twosome takes off, the next twosome should be in position and ready to go. Once the group ahead has shot the layup, the next group can go. Continue for each twosome until required number of layups have been made for the whole team.
- Vary the drill by having the cutter stop short on the wing or baseline to receive a pass for a jump shot (simulates a defender back and under the basket).
