The Sideline Wheel out-of-bounds play is designed to create a layup from two possible initial actions. If the layup is not available, it also adds an aspect of continuity to create a shot opportunity or to progress into your offense.
When the official hands the basketball to O2, O1 cuts hard to the ballside top to receive the pass.
As O1 is receiving the pass, O4 cuts hard to the wing/top area. O1 quickly reverses the basketball to O4. (This is a bit of a timing play as O4 doesn’t want to cut too early).
O2 also has to time his cut. After passing the ball inbounds, he’ll step in and walk his man down toward O3 (who has come up from the low block). As O4 is receiving the reversal pass, O2 cuts hard off of the high post, O5, and looks to receive the pass from O4. If the timing is off and O2 arrives too early, he should look to post up for a possible entry pass from O4.
From the previous action, if O2 wasn’t open for the pass and layup, we have another possible scoring opportunity.
If the pass isn’t made from O4 to O2, O1 cuts down the lane as O3 comes right after and curls around O5. O4 has the option to pass to O1 or O3, if open.
If neither player is open, O4 can reverse to O5 who has popped out to the top. You can now run your normal offensive set.
This is a second option that can be used if O1 is not open on his cut to receive the pass.
If O1 is not open, O3 should make a cut and break hard to the corner to receive the pass from O2.
O1, still at the top after not getting the inbounds pass, will cut off of the high post and to the basket, looking for a pass from O3.
If O1 is not open on his cut, O2 will step in and set a screen for O5. O4, on the weakside, cuts to the top (this also negates possible helpside defense on O1’s cut).
As mentioned in the previous diagram, if O1 isn’t open, he’ll continue through to the opposite block before cutting back out to the weakside wing.
O3 will pass to O5 who reverses to O4. O4 quickly reverses again to O1. O5 will then cut off of O2, looking for the pass from O1 for a layup.
If nothing materialized, progress into your normal offensive set.
