Hoops U. went “live” for the very first time on September 11, 1999.
A lot has certainly changed over the years!
I originally began Hoops U. as a place to share basketball coaching ideas, X’s and O’s, quotes, and more. Nothing has changed in that regard … we still share — we just have a lot more TO share!
Over the years, we have grown to include our Hoops U. brand of books, eBooks, video’s and more … as well as hundreds of other basketball coaching and training products in our Hoops U. Basketball Store.
In 2009, we opened up our premium Hoops U. Insider site, which has now become the Hoops U. Basketball Coaching Academy. The change was, in part, due to the inclusion of our Coaching Development & Certification Program as well as many other features being added to the Academy that were not in the Insider site.
In 2013, we held our first basketball coaching clinic that included presentations from Dick Bennett, Jack Bennett, Randy Brown, Jim Boone, Larry Mckenzie, and Tim Grosz. [More on that clinic here] We hope to continue building on that clinic and have more in the future.
We are certainly not about to sit back and rest … we will continue to strive to be the best that we can become. You will continue to find great basketball coaching and training information and resources such as articles, plays, drills, tactics, strategies and more.

Thank you for checking us out and for riding along this basketball journey with us!
Tony Alfonso is the owner and director of HoopsU.com and our premium membership site, HoopsUAcademy.com.
Coach Alfonso began his basketball journey when he started playing organized basketball in the 5th grade. He played his varsity basketball at Antigo High School in Antigo, WI. From there, he played his college ball at Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN (now the University of Northwestern-St. Paul).
During his final year in college, Tony was hired as the girl’s Junior Varsity coach at Southwest High School in Minneapolis, MN. He continued in that role for 3 years until he was hired as the girl’s varsity head coach. After 1 year, he moved on to start the Strength & Conditioning program at Breck School in the Minneapolis suburb of Golden Valley. He was in that position as Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for 12 years. Throughout the years, Coach Fonz has also coached AAU basketball for both boy’s and girl’s 15U-17U levels.
Tony currently resides in Roseville, MN with his wife, Christine, and their beautiful daughter Gianna Margaret.
