Pete Newell’s 9 Baseline Post Moves against Tight Defense

By Hoops U.

The following 9 post moves are designed to take advantage of the open baseline when the defender is playing close and to the middle. The moves are either on the catch or created through solid footwork. Baseline Power Move 1 When looking over the inside shoulder, the post player sees that the defender is playing close and on the high side. The post player reads that the baseline is open. With the back vertical and a low center of gravity, the player makes the pivot and takes a long step … [Read more...]

30 Second Team Post Game

By Hoops U.

Purpose: To practice getting open in the low and high post areas to receive a pass. The defensive player will practice defending the offensive post player. The passers will work on making good, accurate passes into the post. Drill: 2 teams of 5 per basket (you can use less players if necessary). Each player should be partnered with a player from the opposite team who is of similar size and ability. Two players start in the post, one from each team (O1 and X1). O1 is on offense, therefore his … [Read more...]

Post Player Development: The Battle is Won on the Ground

By Jason Parrish

I find television programs and books about World War II fascinating. If I have a chance to sit back and channel surf for a little, I will almost always stop on a program discussing some aspect of the subject if it's on. One night, I was sitting on my couch, watching the movie Patton (great movie by the way). The scene where he and his men were waiting on better weather to provide relief to the soldiers that were pinned down in Bastogne, otherwise known as the “Battle of the Bulge”. Like most of … [Read more...]

3 Post Scores Drill

By Jeff Osterman

Purpose: To work on the skill of posting up to receive a pass from the perimeter and then scoring against a defender. Drill: O5 starts under the basket with a defender behind (X5). Each 'M' in the diagram stands for a manager (could also be coaches and/or additional players). Each 'manager' has a basketball as they will be the passers. O5 starts by facing his defender. He then steps in, seals the defender and posts up. O5 can call for the basketball from any manager. Once he receives the … [Read more...]

Bad Pass Drill

By Hoops U.

High-Low Post Play

Purpose: To build confidence, reaction, hand-eye coordination, and improve bad hands. Passes into the lane rarely go uncontested and the 'Bad Pass Drill' helps the players learn to catch a bad pass and turn it into a basket or free throw opportunity. Drill: O2 starts on the low block. O1 (or a coach or manager) stands at the top of the key with a basketball. O2 flashes into the lane to begin the drill. O1 throws a bad pass (but catchable) to O2. O2 catches the ball and passes it back to … [Read more...]

Low Post Flash to the Ball Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: For the post player to learn and develop the skill of getting open in the low post. Drill: A coach or player starts with the basketball on the wing. The post player, O5, begins on the opposite low block. O5 fakes one way with a jab step to set up the defender and then cuts the other way toward the ball. As O5 moves into the lane, the hands should be ready to receive the ball. Once O5 receives the ball he should make a move to score such as making a power layup move, drop step, spin, … [Read more...]

10 Spot Post Shot Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: To improve a post player's jump shooting ability by working on game shots from game spots (also great for young players). The focus of this drill is to concentrate on form and technique rather than speed. Drill: The player begins at spot 'A' as shown in the diagram. The player will shoot 10 consecutive shots from spot 'A'. On a made basket, retrieve the ball and continue from spot 'A'. On a missed shot, he must grab the rebound and finish with a score before going back to spot … [Read more...]

Power Layup Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: To develop the drop step, pump fake, and power layup. Drill: 2 basketballs and 2 players per basket. Place a basketball on each block. O1 begins by stepping to the ball and picking it up off the ground. Upon grabbing the ball, he performs a drop step, two pump fakes, and then shoots a power layup. O2 grabs the rebound and places the ball on the vacated block. After shooting, O1 moves to the other block, picks up the ball, drop steps, pump fakes twice, and shoots a power … [Read more...]

Post Player Ball Roll Head Fake Shooting Drill

By Hoops U.

Baseline Breakdown Drill

Purpose: To develop the head and shoulder shot fake from in the low post. The head and shoulder is necessary and essential to getting a shot off in traffic and to possibly draw a foul. Drill: The player, with a basketball, begins at the right elbow. He starts by rolling the basketball along the lane line towards the baseline. Staying low, the player follows the basketball to the block area, picks it up, squares to the backboard, pump fakes and then shoots a power layup (dunk, if … [Read more...]
