Huskie Pick and Roll Play

By Michael Lang

Huskie is a great pick-and-roll basketball play that gives the point guard multiple passing options off of the ball screen. O1 drives his defender into the on-ball screen being set by O4. At the same time, O2 cuts to the weakside corner, using O3 and O5 as a double screen. O1 attacks the lane and looks to pass to either O2 in the corner or O4 rolling down the lane after the screen. … [Read more...]

Irish Sideline Play

By Michael Lang

This sideline out of bounds play is designed to get an easy basket when one is needed at the end of a game. In this setup, the defense will need to be giving some pressure and not 'packing' it in inside the three-point area. When the official hands the basketball to O3, O4, O2, and O1 cut away from their basket into the backcourt. O5 posts up on the ballside low block. O3 passes to O5 and then cuts right to the front of the rim. O5 passes to O3 for the layup. NOTE: If the defense does not … [Read more...]

Prescott Triple Options Play

By Michael Lang

This basketball play makes use of multiple screens to create at least three scoring opportunities. From a low block dive to a lob to a 3-point attempt, your scoring options are covered with this quick hitter! O1 makes the wing entry pass to O4. O3 moves across the lane to set a screen for O5 who dives to ballside low block. O4 makes the pass if available. As O3 is setting the cross screen, O2 walks up to screen O3's defender. After O5 clears, O3 uses the screen and cuts to weakside block … [Read more...]

Butler 1-4 Dive Play

By Michael Lang

This 1-4 basketball play is simple to execute and creates a good scoring chance from either the low block area or the top of the key. Though simple to run, it does a nice job of forcing defenders to get through screens and making quick help decisions. From the 1-4 high formation, O1 dribbles to the right wing replacing O2. O2 cuts into the lane to set a screen for O5 who dives to the ballside low block. O1 makes the pass to O5 if available. As soon as O5 cuts past the screen, O4 turns … [Read more...]

Box Splash

By Michael Lang

In this basketball play from the box set formation, the objective is to create an easy scoring opportunity via a lob or, if that is unavailable, an open 3-point shot attempt. To initiate the play, O4 sets a downscreen for O1 who pops out to the wing to receive the pass from O2. As O1 is receiving the pass, O5 sets a backscreen for O3. O1 looks for the lob pass to O3. After setting the backscreen, O5 continues to the top using the screen from O2. If the lob pass wasn't available, … [Read more...]

Kenya Box Play

By Michael Lang

From the box set formation, this basketball play is designed to get the ball into the low post for a scoring opportunity. With the use of cuts and screens, other options are also available. O4 sets a downscreen for O3 as O2 cuts through to the corner. O1 passes to O3 on the wing. O4, after setting the downscreen seals his defender and posts up. O3 looks to pass to O4 in the low post. Option: After O1 passes to the wing, O5 can step up to the top of the key area. O1 can read if O4 will … [Read more...]

Avery High Line Play

By Michael Lang

This baseline out of bounds play sets up in a line as we often see, however, the players 'line' up higher than is often set. Whether against a man-to-man or a zone defense, this line play will grant several scoring options. When the official hands the basketball to O3, O5 curls back to screen for O1. O2 dives to the opposite low block and O4 cuts straight toward the passer. O3 has the option of passing to any open player who will look to attack and score. … [Read more...]

2-3 Zone High Lob Play

By Michael Lang

This quick-hitting basketball play is designed to create a scoring opportunity against a 2-3 zone defense. The ultimate objective with this play is to use a lob pass to get an easy basket (dunk, layup). It's a simple play to execute and should give you at least one opportunity at an easy two points. O1 initiates this play by passing to O3 on the wing. O1 then cuts over to opposite wing while O2 cuts to the top, replacing O1. O3 passes the basketball to O2 at the top. O2 swings it over … [Read more...]

Vandy Screen Low Zone Play

By Michael Lang

This is a nice basketball play to run against a 2-3 zone defense. It does a great job of screening the zone to create an inside scoring opportunity for your big or an open perimeter shot. O1 initiates this play by passing to O3 on the wing. O3 returns the pass to O1 at the top. O1 dribbles left toward O2 as O3 clears through to the opposite corner. As O1 is dribbling over, O2 cuts down and screens the middle defender. At the same time, O4 is moving over to screen the far side … [Read more...]
