Purpose: To develop the skill of passing against one or two defenders.
Drill: Players will form groups of four; 3 passers and one defender. (See variation below for other option). Use any circle on the court such as the free throw circle or center jump circle. Each group will also need one basketball. In the diagram, the top part demonstrates this drill while the bottom demonstrates the variation.
The three offensive players must always be touching the circle with one foot while playing keepaway from X1. The defender will attempt to intercept or deflect the basketball. When the defender is successful (or if an offensive player is pulled off of the circle), X1 will change positions with the player who threw the bad pass. Passes may not be lobbed over the top of the defender — they should be kept as low or lower than the extended arms of the defender.
- Place two defenders in the middle and four or five passers around the ‘ring’. (bottom part of diagram)
- Use 2 basketballs with the above variation.
