Crossover Step Layup Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: Learning the Crossover Step Layup move will help to create strong shot opportunities when a player drives to the basket. Drill: Players will line up on the wing, as shown. (If you have several baskets at your disposal, use them.) At least one ball per group. The first player begins by dribbling hard to the cone, jump stops, and then executing the crossover step and finishing with a layup/baby hook shot. Grab your shot and pass back to next person in line without a ball and then move … [Read more...]

Setting a Screen Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: To learn how to properly set a screen. Drill: Coach has blocking pad down on the low block. The players form a line on the wing, first player with a basketball. The player will pass the basketball to a player or coach at the top and then go set a down screen. Coaching Points: As mentioned above, the purpose of this simple drill is to learn how to set a screen -- a very important fundamental if your offense is built upon screening. Make sure to teach the players to protect themselves. … [Read more...]

Fast Break Finish Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: To teach players to 'finish' the fast break. This drill teaches the point guard to use the jump stop and it teaches the wing players to run hard at the basket and finish with a layup. Drill: 3 lines at half court, ball in middle line. Coach stands under basket, also with a basketball. The drill begins with the point guard dribbling to the free throw line (you can use a cone, chair, or anything to simulate a defender; thereby forcing the pg to stop). The outside players run hard to the … [Read more...]

Lane Penetration Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: Teach and train basketball players to penetrate into the lane and finish strong. Drill: 2 lines on the wing, one basketball in each line. Place a cone just off the lane/elbow area. The first player begins by utilizing a shot fake, driving to the cone, turning the corner and penetrating into the lane. Execute a jump stop and power up strongly, finishing high off the backboard with the shot. Rebound your shot, pass back to the same line and rotate to the end of the other line. Once shot … [Read more...]

Jab Step to Shot Fake Drill

By Hoops U.

Jab Step to Shot Fake Drill

Purpose: To work on and develop the jab step and penetration into a jump stop, shot fake, and jump shot. This drill can be effective in team practice and is also a great drill for individual workouts. Drill: Set up 3 cones along the three-point line and 3 cones about 8-10 feet from the basket. The cones represent defenders. Divide the team into 3 lines behind each cone. At least 2 basketballs in each line. The first player in line makes a strong jab step in one direction and dribbles to … [Read more...]

Jab Step and Crossover Drill

By Hoops U.

Jab Step and Crossover Drill

Purpose: To teach the various possible moves off of a jab step and how to get open to receive a pass. Drill: The offensive player will perform a V-cut to get open. The player starts on the wing and will make a cut toward the same side low block. If on the right side of the court, as in the diagram, he will plant the right foot and then pivot back up the lane toward the passer. When he comes toward the ball, the player shall give an outside hand (or both hands) as a target for the … [Read more...]
