Basketball Much More Than Just A Game by Larry McKenzie

Basketball: Much More Than Just A Game by Larry McKenzie comes highly recommended by Hoops U. — and it is an especially good read for parents and basketball players.

I say it’s recommended for parents and players because Coach McKenzie really gets into the business behind the game. He offers useful and relevant tips for dealing with coaches, teammates, and for going through the recruting process.

My first coaching job out of college was in the Minneapolis City Conference where I got to see Coach McKenzie’s Patrick Henry HS teams up close. [Coach McKenzie led Patrick Henry High School to 4 consecutive Minnesota state championships]. As I read through Basketball, it’s easy to understand why his teams were so successful. Yes, those teams had a lot of talent, but beyond any X’s and O’s, you can see why his players played so hard for him. It’s obvious that he cares for his players and teaches them to care for themselves.

As I mentioned above, Coach McKenzie talks about things that are relevant for players and parents. He spends time in the book telling players to appreciate their parents and teachers but also gets into sharing some basketball IQ and helping players understand they need to be students of the game. There is also a chapter that deals with recruiting that I think is particularly helpful to players and parents who are going through that process.

Ultimately, Coach McKenzie shares his obvious passion for the game of basketball. Throughout the book, Coach discusses player characteristics that are vital to not only being a good player, but being a good person. He talks about having a positive attitude, being teachable, enjoying the game, and loving life. His insight and wisdom will help players as they develop those characteristics both on and off the court.

Basketball: Much More Than Just A Game is a great book to share with your son or daughter as well as a book you can give to your players. As a coach, I think you will also find some valuable and useful information within the covers.

Basketball: Much More Than Just A Game is available for purchase in the Hoops U. Basketball Store.
