High Cross Screen Box BLOB

By Hoops U.

From the box set formation, this baseline out of bounds play utilizes a high cross screen to create an easy shot opportunity. When the official hands the ball to O1, O5 fakes inside as if he's going to receive the pass and then cuts to the corner. O5 sells the cut and O1 should make the pass fake to draw O5's defender out with him. O3 moves toward the defender guarding O2 while calling out 'back screen'. O2 jabs to the sideline, setting up a cross screen by O4 (who is setting a cross screen … [Read more...]

Inside Pick-the-Picker Play

By Hoops U.

This play works best when O2 is a great shooter. The basic play is run for O2 to come off a double stagger screen set by O5 and O4 for a jump shot from the corner. After running the set described above a few times, O2 may become a decoy as the defense attempts to help. Instead of passing to O2, the play will go to O5. O5, after setting the screen, rolls to the ballside low block. O4 helps open him up by setting a back screen on O5's defender.   … [Read more...]

Scissor Play

By Hoops U.

This baseline out of bounds play uses a scissor action to create open shot opportunities. A simple play to execute, it creates multiple scoring options to attack the inbounds defense and score. When the official hands the ball to O1, O2 and O3 will scissor cut off O5. After they cut past, O5 will screen for O4, who cuts to the corner. O5 should roll back to the basketball after setting the screen. O2 and O3 are the first options for O1. If they are not open, O4 may be open in the corner. If … [Read more...]

Strong Side Weak Side Box Inbounds Play

By Hoops U.

This baseline out of bounds from a box set can be run against either man or zone defenses. It is really simple to implement and simple to execute. There are two options, either of which can be called so the defense will not be certain which you will execute. Strong Side When the official hands the ball to O2, O5 pops out to the corner. O2 will pass to O5 as O1 cuts to the wing. O5 passes to O1 and sets a downscreen for O2. O1 will pass to O2 for the shot or a possible post entry to O5. If … [Read more...]

4 Across 'Deacon' Play

By Hoops U.

This '4 Across' play is a great play that should offer a chance for either an open layup or an open jump shot/3 pointer. It is also the play Wake Forest used to score a last second win vs. Duke on 1/28/2009. Four players set up in a '4 across' as shown. O2 should be your best shooter and O5 should be your best low post scorer. When the official hands the ball to O1, O2 will utilize the triple screen being set by O3, O4 and O5. O5 is the key player in this play because he needs to pay … [Read more...]

4 Low Lob

By Hoops U.

The 4 Low Lob baseline out of bounds play is designed to get a quick shot when time may not even allow for a catch and shoot. The pass may need to be tipped in for a score. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O4 sets a screen for O5 and then rolls back to the basketball, pinning his defender behind him. O5 must set up his defender to the low side and then step high and curl to the front of the rim. O1 looks for O5 on the lob and then to O4 if the defenders switch. The O5 position … [Read more...]

Baseline Upscreen Cross Screen Play

By Hoops U.

Baseline Upscreen Cross Screen Play

This is a simple but quite effective baseline out of bounds play you can run against a man-to-man defense. By utilizing a couple of simple screens, you create 2 possible shot opportunities -- a corner/short corner jump shot or a layup. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O3 sets an upscreen for O2 and O5 sets a cross screen for O4. O1looks first to O4, then to O2. O5 is also a potential option should his defender overhelp on O4. O5 should just seal and step to the ball for … [Read more...]

Switch Around the Horn Inbounds Play

By Hoops U.

Switch Around the Horn Inbounds Play

This baseline out of bounds play from a box set formation can be run against man-to-man or zone defenses. It is a 2-phase play that, against a man-to-man defense, will force the defenders to fight through screens. Against a zone, it will cause the defense to overshift, creating an open shot. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O5 moves across the lane and sets a screen for O4. If O4 is open, he can take the pass for a layup or short jump shot. O5, who set the screen, should … [Read more...]
