Read the 2-3 Inbound Options Play

By Hoops U.

The Read the 2-3 Inbound Options play is designed to be run against a team that defends the baseline inbounds play with a 2-3 zone defense. A smart passer and smart receiver will almost guarantee an open shot opportunity. The diagram above shows the base formation of the Read the 2-3 Inbound Options play. One player stands in each corner outside the 3-point line. Both players should be threats to shoot the '3'. The other two players line up at the free throw line in a doublestack formation. … [Read more...]

T Set Inbounds Options

By Hoops U.

This out of bounds play from a 'T' formation can be run against man or zone defenses and has a couple of options or counterattacks to utilize when the defense attempts to make adjustments. When the official hands the ball to 1, 2 will run off a screen being set by 5 and 3 runs off 4's screen. 2 or 3 may be open for three-point or perimeter jump shots. After setting the screens, both 4 and 5 should seal their defenders as they may be open for a pass or lob from 1. If you have run this play … [Read more...]

3 Across High Pass Cut Option

By Hoops U.

This is a great out of bounds play you can run against either a man-to-man or zone defense. It has 2 options ... either option can be called or simply run, depending on how one player is being defended. This out of bounds play sets up with three players lined up across the free throw or mid-lane area, with O5 in the middle. O2 starts at the top of the key. O5 starts approximately 5-10 feet away from the basket. O1, taking the basketball out of bounds, throws a high pass to O5 if he is being … [Read more...]

Triangle Screen the Screener Play

By Hoops U.

This is a baseline out of bounds play that can be run against either man or zone defenses. Three players line up in a triangle formation -- O4 and O5 on the low blocks and O3 at the free throw line. The fourth player, O2, starts about two steps from the top of the key. The fifth man, O1, is inbounding the basketball. When the official hands the ball to O1, O5 screens for O3. O3 should set his defender up by taking a hard step away and then using the screen and cutting hard to the ballside … [Read more...]

Spread Inbounds Play

By Hoops U.

The Spread Inbounds Play spread the zone with the initial attempt at sealing in the low post. Additional options to seal defenders and cut open create a good scoring chance to use against a zone defense. When the official hands the ball to O4, O5 seals one of the low zone defenders and O2 cuts either high or low behind the zone. O4 is looking for O5 posting up or O2 behind the zone. If O4 cannot get the ball in, O3 will screen the outside zone defender and O5 will pop out to the corner. O3 … [Read more...]

Shrink Play

By Hoops U.

'Shrink' is a baseline out of bounds play you can run against zone defenses. This play forces the defense to collapse, thereby opening up a 3-point shot attempt. O5, O4, and O3 form a stack or line near the free throw lane. O2 spots up in the weakside corner for a pass from the inbounder, O1. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O5 and O4 cut into the open gaps near the basket at the base of the zone. O3 cuts to the open area in the middle of the zone. The cuts of O5, O4, and O3 … [Read more...]

High Stack Baseline Inbounds Play

By Hoops U.

This baseline out-of-bounds play versus a zone defense is set at the free throw line area in order to spread the defense out. When the official hands the ball to O3, O2 cuts hard to the corner. O5 screens a zone defender for O4, who cuts off the screen and toward the inbounder. O5 should look to seal the defender and then dive down to the weakside low block area. O1 releases as the safety valve in case no one else is open. … [Read more...]

Offset Line

By Hoops U.

This baseline out of bounds play from a line set with one player offset can be utilized against either a man or zone defense. When the official hands the ball to O1, O5 cuts off of O4 toward the basket, tapping O4 as he passes him. Upon feeling the tap, O4 cuts to the corner. O2 cuts out to the top as the safety valve. O3 stays put, possibly sealing off a defender to receive a pass (much like posting up). O1 will look to pass to O5 first, then to O4 or O3. If nothing is available, throw it out … [Read more...]

Box Zone Lob Play

By Hoops U.

This baseline zone out of bounds play is designed to get a lob and is initiated out of a box set. You may even find success with this play against a man-to-man. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O5 makes a hard baseline cut calling for the basketball. O4 sets an up screen for O2 and then looks for the lob pass from O1. Quick Reverse Play

By Hoops U.

Swing Offense

This baseline inbounds play is most effective against a zone defense by getting the basketball in play and then quickly reversing it around to the inbounds passer for a shot opportunity. Open shots may also show during the reversal. When the official hands the ball to O1, O5 steps forward with hands up, O3 breaks to the right, and O4 breaks to the left across the lane. O1 passes to O3, steps on court, and then cuts under the basket and across the lane to the opposite baseline / short corner … [Read more...]
