Would you build your house on a shaky or weak foundation? Exactly. You won’t build until you have properly laid the foundation. And if you want it to last, you build on as strong a foundation as you can. The same holds true for your basketball program.
If your basketball program is the house, what is it built upon? What is the foundation?
You cannot build a successful program unless you build it on solid offensive and defensive fundamentals.
It is often said in basketball that fundamentals equal success. That statement holds true for basketball, any other sport, business, and life. If proper fundamentals have not been taught (and learned), you will not be successful.
As basketball coaches, we often want to build our program quickly. We want instant success. We may even achieve success. However, in order to build a basketball program that will stand the test of time it is imperative to spend a lot of time teaching the fundamentals.
Think of it in the following way … you may have a successful season or two, but what happens when you graduate 4 or 5 kids? What happens when your star player suffers an injury? What happens when a couple of players transfer?
If you have put in the time teaching the fundamentals, your teams will always have a bright outlook for the future!
Build your program. Install your offensive and defensive systems. But do it all with a foundation built on the fundamentals. Take the time and effort in teaching the fundamentals.
Do you spend time on the fundamentals? How has putting a focus on the fundamentals affected your program? Share with us in the comments below!
