… AS CHRONICLED BY, AND WITH THE PERSONAL MEMOIRS + OCCASSIONAL PHILOSOPHIZING OF THE AUTHOR, ONE STEPHEN J. McKEE”
THIS POST ORIGINALLY SCRIBBLED ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1972
Previous game: Centaurs 81, Lehigh CCC 71
Next game: Northampton Area Community College, tomorrow
FOUND OUT THAT FR. DEVINE WAS NONE TOO PLEASED WITH OUR PERFORMANCE ON FRIDAY AGAINST LEHIGH CCC. Can’t say where I blame him! I think we realize we pulled our first victory our of our butts.
I had nine rebounds against LCCC! When the hell did I get them? Bobby Hoeffner had 11. He really did play a tough game. He broke his nose, too. But he said it’s nothing new, he’s lost track of how many times he’s done it.
Tomorrow, Northampton Area Community College. The second of the two games we have dedicated to ourselves. As you know our beginning against LCCC was rocky, at best. I hope we get on the right track tomorrow.

WELCOME TO CENTAUR SEASONS. “I hope We Blow Them Off the Court” here on HoopsU.Com appears also on CENTAUR SEASONS, a “memory blog” of the half-good, half-bad, all-new Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales Centaurs in Center Valley, Pennsylvana. Forty years ago Steve kept a diary of his junior-year season. A blog before its time then, “A History of the Events …” is now an e-diary at CENTAUR SEASONS and here on HoopsU.com.

Right now both John Cooper and I are sick. So is Dave Glielmi. I don’t know how sick Coop is, but I feel like s—. I had to struggle through 85 pages of Mainsfield Park. And I mean struggle. Looks like the beginning of the season ain’t turning out quite as I planned. But I’m not really worried now. I feel confident. I know I’ll do all right. I did against the Lehigh freshman and Ursinus College. That’s how I know I can play. All I gotta do is start playing that way.
The Ursinus scrimmage was something else. First of all, Tommy Shirley, a freshman gaurd who lives down near there, got us lost, and we didn’t get there till a quarter-to-seven, game time seven o’clock. We came out slow, but we took the lead at 14-12 and we never lost it. I was 5 for 6 from the field. That’s how I know I can shoot. Bobby Stormes and Bobby Hoeffner played tough underneath. Tommy Shirley surprised everybody by playing as well as he did. Although it’s stock: Tommy is “promising.”
The Ursinus fieldhouse was unbelievable. Fully carpeted, tartan floor, swimming pool, the whole bit. When we entered the gym somebody asked us where Allentown College was located. We get that a lot:
“Allentown? What? Oh, the community college?”
“No, ma’am. Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales.”
Well, Ursinus knows where we are now!
Bobby Stormes is funny. He plays a crazy, all-over-the-court game, elbows and knees going every which way. And he pays the price — but won’t give up, won’t ever sit out. His entire right side is held together with tape – his knee, his groin, his hip. When we get to practice before Coach, we all get dressed. Bobby gets into sweatbands and socks. When Coach finally comes – and the tape – Bobby starts, as he says, to repair not only what needs repairing but to repair the repairs. (It’s funny when Bobby says it.)
Not much else to say. Northampton tomorrow. I hope we blow them off the court (that phrase has a distinct ring of familiarity to it), if for no other reason but that senior captain Chris Cashman can get a lot of playing time and build up his confidence. I think that’s all he needs right now. He destroyed his ankle on the first day of practice and since he didn’t play against Lehigh CCC, his played-in-every-game-streak ended. You could see it killed him, even as he tried not to let you see it kill him.
Till tomorrow …
