How Technology Has Affected the NBA

By Hoops U.

Technology has positively permeated virtually every sector including sports. This piece takes a look at the various ways through which NBA has benefited from the proliferation of technology.

Wearable Chips and Sensors

Wearable sensors and microchips have become valuable additions to the playing gear of many teams in the NBA.  The teams use the technology to keep tabs on athletes in different ways. Using the technology, the technical bench for the teams will be able to take note of important metrics like rehab progress, player workload, jumping, acceleration and more. The microchips have been very successful because they don’t interfere with the players comfort during games. They are usually one ounce and fits seamless on the back or any corner of the jersey.

Online gaming portals

The NBA is already very popular but the sustainability of its popularity hinges heavily on the association’s ability to pull in more viewers as older generations move on and keep interest levels high. They have been able to achieve this through a number of ways but one option that has resonated soundly with the younger generations is the number of online gaming portals that offer different variants of NBA themed games. From actual basketball games to basketball bingo derivatives as offered on sites that can be found here www.bingosweets.com, online games have helped the NBA’s popularity.

Social Media

Similar to the point above, the social media has helped the popularity of the NBA a great deal. Teams use it to draw more people to the fan base.  2015 was a record breaking year as social media followers across all league, team and player social platforms increased by a massive 40%.  One of the major benefits of the increased exposure is the increase in NBA’s marketing power which in turn helps improve the sport at all levels.

Coaches Eye

Coaches Eye is software that has a corresponding app on all the main mobile operating systems.   The app allows coaches, trainers and even parents to record basketball players during games or training sessions. With the software, you can get quick or slow motion replays, side by side comparisons and more.

Wireless and Instant Replay technology

In the NBA, “last touch” during the last two minutes of a game can only be determined using instant replays. Officials use the instant replays and wireless communication technology to make important decisions.  Since the adoption of these technologies, contentious decisions have been almost eliminated in the game in general.

A combination of the technologies above has helped the NBA in many ways. Trainers and coaches can now improve players based on statistics and easily find out problem areas to work on in training. Technology also makes it easy for them to always create the best line up in relation to opponent being faced. Fans on their part can now better keep tabs on their favourite team and players, thereby increasing connection and attraction to the game. Teams are not left out as digital statistics software allows a more definitive understanding of opponents and better preparation ahead of games.
