Pick and Roll From the Low Post Drill

By Hoops U.

This pick-and-roll drill from the low post is a great way to break down the pick and roll, especially if you want to have your low post player come out and set the pick and roll. The pick and roll is extremely effective and this variation might be a bit more challenging for many defenses because most teams do not set the on-ball screen coming from the low post. Purpose: To teach the proper technique for setting an on-ball screen. This pick and roll drill specifically teaches setting and using … [Read more...]

Continuous Low Post Cross Screen Drill

This offensive breakdown drill is simple but very useful in teaching the block-to-block cross screen. It allows the players to focus on the footwork and movement used in setting and utilizing the low post cross screen, rather than worrying about defenders. Purpose: To teach the block-to-block cross screen and have players work on setting the screen, using the screen, and finishing with a strong power move. Drill: 3 players and 1 basketball at each basket. Players 4 and 5 begin on the low … [Read more...]

Baseline Drive and Kick Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: To develop scoring in game situations, specifically when a teammate penetrates and kicks the ball out to the perimeter. Drill: O1 begins on the wing with a basketball and is defended by X1. O2 starts on the opposite wing. O1 penetrates baseline to the basket and then kicks the ball out to O2 on the weakside wing. O2 should be sliding down the wing so that O1 can see him and to give him a passing angle. X1 influences O1 to the baseline and then closes out on O2 after the pass is … [Read more...]

Low Post Flash to the Ball Drill

By Hoops U.

Purpose: For the post player to learn and develop the skill of getting open in the low post. Drill: A coach or player starts with the basketball on the wing. The post player, O5, begins on the opposite low block. O5 fakes one way with a jab step to set up the defender and then cuts the other way toward the ball. As O5 moves into the lane, the hands should be ready to receive the ball. Both wings will make a V-cut in order to get open and receive a pass. The guard passes to one of the wings and then screens away for the opposite wing.
