Simplified Zone Press Break

By Alan Griffin

I always seem to be changing offenses or defenses based on personnel. However, I have never changed my press break; its simple, effective, and can flow into any game plan. Alignment and duties: Always goes to the left of the basket, looking for the ball. He is our primary ball handler and our first option. Streaks down the floor setting up on the right wing, looking for a transition Breaks right looking for inbound pass. Always goes to the ball after the basket as the inbounder. … [Read more...]

Rover ‘Beat the Trap’ Zone Offense

By Hoops U.

The Rover "Beat the Trap" Zone Offense is a situational offense that can be used against either man-to-man or zone defenses that attempt to trap the offensive player with the basketball. More specifically, it works best when the defense sets the double team as soon as the ball crosses the midcourt line. The Rover Zone Offense can be used like a quick hitter, however, it's more of a set that players need to be aware of and prepared to run as soon as the defense jumps a trap on them. As shown … [Read more...]

Zone Delay Spread Offense

By Hoops U.

The Zone Delay Spread Offense is an offensive set you can utilize at or near the end of game situations when you are trying to use clock and the defense is in a zone. It is not entirely a continuity offense because there isn't a set pattern to follow but it is effective against a defense that is pressuring you with a halfcourt zone. I think more often than not, most teams that are behind in this situation will play man-to-man but I have seen some teams stay in their zone. This is a simple … [Read more...]

By Hoops U.

The chances are good that you will come across a few pressing teams during the season. The chances are even better that you will be pressed if you are ahead in the waning moments of a close game. Are your players prepared? You may have installed a press break offense to help them counter a pressing defense, but have you taught them HOW to break a press? Are they aware of the nuances that will allow them to more easily break and attack pressure defense? The following 6 tips can be applied when … [Read more...]

High Check Offense vs. Half-Court Pressure

By Hoops U.

The High Check Offense is an excellent offensive set against pressure at midcourt. It takes away unnecessary dribbling and allows you to attack the basket with only one or two passes. It can be incorporated against tough man-to-man pressure as well as half-court zones and traps. O1 dribbles the ball upcourt and is heavily pressured by a defender or a potentially trapping defense. O5 will place himself above the top of the key area (he can start here or flash from below the free throw line). O1 … [Read more...]
