Double High Pick and Roll Swing Low

By Hoops U.

This basketball play was executed by the Miami Heat during their series-clinching game 5 win of the 2012 NBA Finals. In the Heat version, LeBron James was able to cut to the low block and score on a layup. O4 and O5 set a double high pick-and-roll for O1. O1, instead of using either screen, swings the ball over to O2. On the pass to O2, O3 makes a backdoor cut to the low block. O2 makes the pass to O3 for the layup. Coaching Points: O4 and O5 must sell the picks and O1 must sell that he is … [Read more...]

Double High Box Set Play

By Jeff Osterman

'Double High' box set play creates great scoring opportunities with an initial double ballscreen at the top. This ballscreen, along with a few other screens and cuts, gives the point guard options with which to attack the defense. To initiate the 'Double High' play, the point guard (O1) dribbles to the left. O4 and O5 step out to set a high on-ball screen. O1 uses the screens and dribbles back to the right. If O4 is not open and O1 cannot create or penetrate, he continues with the ball to … [Read more...]

Dallas

By Jeff Osterman

The 'Dallas' set play gives the point guard several options to create scoring opportunities. The multiple on-ball screens put pressure on the defense and can create easy scoring opportunities if they are not effective at defending the pick-and-roll. The players start as shown in the above diagram. O1 has the ball at the top with O4 and O5 at the elbows. O2 and O3 set up in the corners. Both O4 and O5 step up to set an on-ball screen for the point guard. O1 has the option to go either left or … [Read more...]

Middle Drive Staggered Kickout Play

By Hoops U.

This set play utilizes an on-ball screen so the point guard can penetrate into the lane, creating either a shot for the point guard or a kickout for 3 should the defense over-help. 1 begins by passing to 3 on the wing and following his pass for a handoff from 3. After handing the basketball back to 1, 3 will set a diagonal downscreen across the lane for 4. 4 flashes to the basketball. 1 does have the option of passing to 4 in the lane if he is open. 4 then sets an on-ball screen for 1, … [Read more...]

High Pick with Screen Option

By Hoops U.

This 'High Pick' box set play is a difficult quick hitter to defend. It utilizes a pick and roll and a couple of cuts/screens to create kick-out options on the middle drive. There is also a built in option for a player to either cut or set a doublescreen. The play begins with O4 setting a screen for O1. O3 clears diagonally to the opposite corner while O1 penetrates to the middle. O2 uses a baseline screen from O5 to clear to the other side. O4 will step out or roll to the basket, depending … [Read more...]

Clear-Out 2-Man Play

By Hoops U.

This is a good play when you have players that can run the pick and roll. With the clear-out -- and a good twosome who can run the pick-and-roll, you will find a lot of easy baskets with this play. The Clear-Out 2-Man Play starts in a low double stack formation. O1 initiates the play by dribbling to one side of the court. It doesn't matter which side is chosen because the play can be run on either side. The two low players in the stack simply need to know proper movement. In this diagram, as … [Read more...]
