Gonzaga Triple Zone Option

By Wes Kosel

In this zone offense quick hitting play run by Gonzaga, there are at least 3 potential scoring options from in the post to penetration to a 3-point shot. An excellent basketball play... 5 and 4 sprint up to set screens on the outside zone defenders. 1 uses the screen to dribble to the right wing. 2 replaces 1. 5 and 4 roll after the screens. 1st option: Pass to 4 posting up inside. 2nd option: Pass to 2 at the top of the key for an isolation play. 3rd option: Swing the … [Read more...]

Racer Zone Play

By Hoops U.

This zone offense set play, which will work best against a 1-3-1 zone defense, incorporates a quick ball reversal and down screen to get an open perimeter shot opportunity. From a 2-3 high offensive set, O2 passes to O4 on the wing, cuts to the basket and comes around a screen by O3 on the weak side. O5 steps out, receives the pass from O4 and quickly reverses it to O1, who passes to O2 for a wing / baseline shot. O3 should time the screen by not setting it too quickly. He will also be … [Read more...]

Line-Stack Zone Play

By Hoops U.

Diamond Press Zone Defense

With the 'Line-Stack' zone offense quick hitter, you can execute a play that utilizes a line, or stack formation to gain several scoring opportunities. The two best shooters should on the low end of the line and the best low post player should be on top. The point guard has the ball at the top of the key. The play … [Read more...]

23 High Misdirection

By Hoops U.

Tag Cutter to Closeout Drill

Purpose: This quick hitter can be used against an odd-front such as the 1-3-1. A 1-3-1 zone defense is designed to keep the offense on the perimeter and eliminate layups. Many teams use it to disrupt the offense by employing traps and denials. Don't let the defense attack you -- attack the defense! The 23 high misdirection play starts the ball on one side to get the defense to shift; it then reverses the ball to the other side for the attack. The Play: The 23 High Misdirection starts with 2 … [Read more...]
