Howard Handoff Pick and Roll Play

By Jeff Osterman

Pressure Basketball by Jack Ramsay

This quick hitter utilizes a dribble handoff into a pick and roll to create a great scoring chance. As O1 brings the ball upcourt, O3 slides up from the corner. O1 and O3 execute a dribble handoff maneuver. As O1 and O3 execute the dribble handoff, O5 flashes up to set an on-ball screen for O3. O3 uses the screen to attack the lane. O5 rolls to the basket after setting the screen. O3 may have the shot, the pass to O5, or the kick out pass to O1 (as shown in the diagram). If nothing … [Read more...]

Eastern Illinois

By Jeff Osterman

This quick hitter is a scoring set that creates opportunities by utilizing an on-ball screen, flex screen, and downscreen. The multiple screens and cuts makes this difficult to defend. As you will see, there are also multiple opportunities throughout the play to get a good shot attempt. The players start as shown in the above diagram. O4 sets a downscreen for O3 and then slides out to the wing. O3 looks to receive the pass from O1 at the top. O5 sets a backscreen for O1 who cuts through to … [Read more...]

Texas 1-4 Play

By Jeff Osterman

From the 1-4 high set, this play incorporates a couple of on-ball screens along with some other options to get a score. The players begin in a 1-4 high set as shown in the diagram above. O4 and O5 both step out from their respective high post/elbow position to set an on-ball screen for O1. The point guard, O1 has the option of going either way. Whichever way he goes, the ballside guard on that side will dive down to the low block (in this diagram, O1 goes right and O2 dives low). O2, after … [Read more...]

St. Louis

By Jeff Osterman

This quick hitter uses some weakside action after a ball reversal to create a couple of potential scoring options. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. O1 passes to O3 on the wing and then cuts through to the ballside corner. O4 flashes to top of key for ball reversal. O3 passes the basketball to O4 at the top who reverses it to O2 on the wing. O5 sets a diagonal screen for O3 who cuts through to ballside low block area. O2 can make the pass to O3 if open. If O3 wasn't open … [Read more...]

Pacific

By Jeff Osterman

Pacific is a baseline out of bounds play that gets the basketball to the top and then sets up a scoring opportunity with a pick-and-roll play. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. When the official hands the basketball to O2, O3 dives to the weakside low block while O1 performs a v-cut to get open. Obviously the pass can be made to O3, but that defender would have to be completely asleep for that to be open (though it does happen, doesn't it?!). O2 makes the pass to O1 and then … [Read more...]

Maine Sideline Play

By Jeff Osterman

This sideline out of bounds utilizes a triple-staggered screen, a fade screen, and a skip pass to create shot and/or penetration opportunities. The players set up as shown. When the official hands the ball to O3, O1 cuts hard to the top using the triple-staggered screen from O2, O5, and O4. After O1 has cut passed, O5 dives to the ballside short corner area. Obviously, if O5 is open here, he can take the shot. As O5 receives the inbounds pass, O4 goes out to set a screen for O1. O1 fades to … [Read more...]

Wing Low Post Iso

By Jeff Osterman

This set play is designed to be used against a zone defense. The objective is to create a 1-on-1 opportunity in the low post for a player that initially starts out on the wing. The play begins with O1 passing to O2 on the wing and cutting to the opposite low block. O2 dribbles back to the top of the key as O3 dives to the nail (middle of free throw line). O3 dives down to the low block and sets a double screen for O1 who cuts to the corner. After setting the double screen, O5 pops out to … [Read more...]

Florida Triple Double Play

By Jeff Osterman

This basketball play is so named because it incorporates 3 double screens in quick succession to create an open shot opportunity. This is a tough one to defend. Players set up as shown in above diagram. As O1 nears crosses midcourt and nears the top of the key, O2 curls over the top of a double screen being set by O4 and O5. O1 will make the pass to O2 if open. If O2 didn't receive the pass, O3 will then cut to the wing using a double screen from O4 and O5. O1 makes the pass to O3. As O3 … [Read more...]

L.A.

By Jeff Osterman

Basketball Scouting Report Notebook

This simple to run play can create a layup from a give-and-go or a 3-point attempt off of a downscreen. It's a great play to create a shot for a perimeter player while making his defender work hard to cover. Players set up as shown in the above diagram. L.A. is initiated by a wing pass from O2 to O5. After making the pass, O2 runs a give-and-go by setting up his defender the other way and then rubbing him off of O3. O5 can make the pass to O2 if open. O4 and O1 screen for each other to keep … [Read more...]

1-4 Elbow Play

By Jeff Osterman

'Elbow' from the 1-4 high set is designed to get a jump shot from the elbow area. A few cuts and screens also create other potential scoring options. O1 enters to O3 on the wing and cuts through to ballside corner. O4 screens away for O2. O5 sets an on-ball screen for O3 and then sets a downscreen for O1. O3 uses the on-ball screen and looks to penetrate and get a jumper from the elbow area. If help is lacking, he may be able to get deep into the lane or go all the way to the basket. If … [Read more...]
