Clear-Out 2-Man Play

By Hoops U.

This is a good play when you have players that can run the pick and roll. With the clear-out -- and a good twosome who can run the pick-and-roll, you will find a lot of easy baskets with this play. The Clear-Out 2-Man Play starts in a low double stack formation. O1 initiates the play by dribbling to one side of the court. It doesn't matter which side is chosen because the play can be run on either side. The two low players in the stack simply need to know proper movement. In this diagram, as … [Read more...]

Step Play

By Hoops U.

The 'Step Play' is a basketball play that can be used to get your players in good scoring position. The post player, O5, is a good pivot man kept close to the basket and the corner guard, O2, is skilled at shooting and driving. O5 begins at the low post just outside the free throw lane. O2 is a step or two away. O1 makes the pass to O2 and clears through the lane to the weak side of the court. Once O2 has the basketball, O5 takes a step and sets a screen on X2. As O2 starts the drive and X1 … [Read more...]

Multiple Screen Options Play

By Hoops U.

This quick hitter utilizes multiple screens to create open scoring opportunities. It forces the defense to be aware of the screens and to get through them. Ball reversals keep the defense on guard and allows you to easily move right in to your motion or set offense if a scoring chance doesn't present itself. To begin, O4 and O2 start at the free throw line and set a doublescreen for O3 at the low block. O3 curls around the screen looking for a pass from O1. After O3 curls passed, O4 then sets … [Read more...]

The Wall Play

By Hoops U.

Pass and Score Under Pressure Drill

The Wall Play is a quick hitting basketball play that creates two possible scoring options. One player will essentially receive a triple-screen and another will curl off of a double-screen. The Wall Play begins with the players set up as shown in the diagram. O1 passes to O2 and then goes behind for a return pass. O2 then cuts across the lane with O4 and sets the 'wall' (triple screen) with O5. O3 sets up his defender and then attempts to lose him on the screen (option 1). O2 will then step … [Read more...]

Triple Stack

By Hoops U.

This man offense quick hitter starts from a triple stack alignment and incorporates several curls and cuts to create an open shot. O1 receives an on-ball screen from O5 while O4 curls over the stack to the ball side corner and O3 curls around the stack and back up to the left wing. O1 comes off the ball screen with several options to utilize (see next diagram). O1 can drive to the basket. O1 can execute a pick-and-roll with O5. O1 can use the screen and pass to O3 for a shot. O1 can use … [Read more...]

Reversal Backcut High Flash

By Hoops U.

This quick hitter begins in a 4 around 1 set and utilizes quick passes, a backpick, and a high flash. The play begins with O1 passing to O3 on the wing. O1 will move high and behind O3 to show for a return pass. O3 fakes the pass back to O1 and passes to O2. O2 quickly reverses to O4 on the right wing. As O4 receives the pass, O3 cuts into the lane using the screen set by O5. After setting the screen, O5 flashes into the lane/high post area. O4 has the option of passing to O3 for a layup or O5 … [Read more...]

Low Post Interchange Play

By Hoops U.

This 'low post interchange' play is a nice play to utilize at any level. It is simple to teach and simple to execute, with the objective being to interchange the post players to get free for an open shot. It can be incorporated into any motion set and even just used as a quick hitter! It's just a good way to get a post player open! To execute the low post interchange play, have two post players set up on opposite low blocks. The play starts with a wing pass to O2. As the ball is in the air, O4 … [Read more...]

Confidence Basketball Play

By Hoops U.

Amoeba Defense

This play is called the 'Confidence Basketball Play' because it is designed to give your top scorer an easy score. It is also a great play to run at the start of the game to build up the players confidence early. O5 and O4 start outside the three-point line and just wide of the lane, as shown. O2 starts on the low post and O3 is the corner area. (O4 is the 'top scorer' -- if it's a different numbered player on your team, just switch the positions so that your top scorer is in the O4 … [Read more...]

1-4 Low Post Isolation Play

By Hoops U.

This quick hitter is designed to get a one-on-one isolation in the low post. The play begins with the players in a 1-4 high set. #1 dribbles to the wing; this clears out #3, who loops back to the top of the key. #4 slides down to the low block before #3 cuts through. As soon as #3 gets past the foul line, #4 reverses and sets a backscreen for #3. #1 will look to pass to #3 cutting to the basket or on the low block. If #3 is not open, #4 pops out to the top of the key and receives a pass … [Read more...]

Double Stack Isolation Play

By Hoops U.

The double stack isolation play is designed to take advantage of a mismatch. If you believe one of your players can take advantage of his defender, this may be a useful play to call. You can also utilize this isolation play against an opponent that is in foul trouble. That defender may pick up a foul or simply guard as aggressively as he should. The play starts with the point guard, O1, at the top while the other four players set up in a low double stack, as shown. One of the two low players … [Read more...]
