Loyola 1-4 Basketball Play

By Jeff Osterman

Out of the 1-4 high set, 'Loyola' has a lot of good action that can create shots off of a basket cut or there are options to create open 3-pointers. The players set up in a 1-4 high set as shown above. The point guard, O1 initiates the action by passing to O3 on the wing and then cutting off of O5 to the low block. O3 can pass to O1 if open on the cut. O3 steps out to top of key to replace O1. O3 reverses the basketball back to O4 at the top. O2 takes a few steps towards O4 and … [Read more...]

Point Guard Screen Play

By Jeff Osterman

Great Results Team Building

Run this play against a zone defense to get a 3-point attempt from the corner. As you can see from the diagrams below, the point guard is screened to receive the pass and create an opening for the shooting guard to attempt the shot. 1 passes to 3 on the wing and cuts to the ballside block. 4 pops out to corner and receives pass from 3. 4 screens outside of zone for 1 to cut to corner. 1 dribbles to bring out bottom of zone. 2 runs baseline for one more pass and the shot!   … [Read more...]

Marist 3-Point Play

By Jeff Osterman

This set play is essentially designed to get a 3-point shot. There are a couple of opportunities with the best chance coming off of a ball reversal and staggered or double screen. This might be the play you need when you need a '3'. 2 pops to corner and receives pass from 1. 1 cuts behind 4. If open, 2 can take the shot. 3 pops and receives pass from 2. Probably not open for shot, but might be available. Most likely, 3 should quickly reverse the basketball to 1, who is popping out from the … [Read more...]

Double Screen Flare 3

By Hoops U.

Double Screen Flare 3 is a quick hitter designed to get a 3-point shot attempt. It can be used from your halfcourt set or it can be quite effective from your secondary break. Players start as shown. If run out of secondary break, O5 is trailing play while O1 dribbles across midcourt. O1 passes to O2 on the wing and breaks as if cutting to the basket. O3 and O5 slide over to set a doublescreen for O1. O1 cuts back, using the doublescreen to flare to opposite wing. O2 skips the basketball to O1 … [Read more...]

Evansville

By Jeff Osterman

'Evansville' is a quick hitter that utilizes a flare screen to create an open 3-point shot attempt. If the 3-pointer is not available, there is an additional screen-the-screener action which can create multiple shot opportunities. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. O5 breaks hard from the ballside low block to the top weakside wing area and receives the pass from O1. O3 cuts down to replace O5 on the low block. O1 takes a few hard steps as though running a give-and-go down the … [Read more...]

Misdirection for 3

By Hoops U.

Utilize this misdirection play when you need a 3-pointer for a last second shot. Also a good quick hitter to open up your point guard for an open shot attempt. This play starts as O1 dribbles toward O2 on the wing. O1 and O2 execute a dribble handoff. As O2 receives the handoff, he continues to the left for a dribble or two. O5, who is hanging around between the three-point line and lane now sets a flare screen for O1. At the same time, O3 cuts hard to the basket and then pops back out by … [Read more...]

Drive Staggered for 3-Point Shot

By Hoops U.

The Drive Staggered for 3-Point Shot is designed to get your best shooter an open 3-point shot attempt. By utilizing a dribble-drive and kick out pass to the shooter coming off of a staggered double screen, the chances are good you will get an open 3-point shot. 1 passes to 3 on the wing while 2 runs up from the low post and screens for 4 cutting to the basket on the weakside. 3 dribbles hard to the corner to draw the defense.
