Ball Screen Double Screen Behind

By Jeff Osterman

A real nice box set play here that utilizes an on-ball screen followed by a double screen behind the play. This one creates a possible layup opportunity or an open 3-point attempt. 2 cuts over 4 and 5. 1 drives off 4's on-ball screen. 1 has option to take it to rim or throw back to 2 coming off the double screen behind.   … [Read more...]

Box Pick-and-Roll Drive Option

By Hoops U.

This basketball play is part of our 2015 "12 Plays of Christmas". See all 12 basketball plays here. Box Pick-and-Roll Option is a fantastically simple basketball play from the box set formation. It is especially useful for a team that has a point guard who can penetrate and score effectively. It is also a good play in that it allows for other options should the point guard penetration get defended. Players set up in a box formation. As O1 brings ball across midcourt, O4 and O5 step up … [Read more...]

High Handoff and Screen Play

By Hoops U.

This is a nice quick hitting basketball play you can use when you want to attack the basket off of dribble penetration. It gives the point guard a scoring option or allows him to create an opportunity for a cutting teammate. The play is initiated with the pass from O1 to O2 on the wing. O2 may need to V-cut, L-cut, or start low in order to get open. O1 follows his pass, receives a handoff from O2 and dribbles to attack the basket. As O2 is performing the handoff, O4 steps out to the … [Read more...]

Ballscreen Dribble Drive Kick Out Play

By Hoops U.

This play is designed to get a quick shot attempt. It might be most useful in end-of-game situations where a quick 3-pointer is wanted but a 2-pointer is okay as well. The players set up with a good three-point shooter in each corner and two good screeners at the elbow area. The point guard is bringing the basketball upcourt. As O1 brings it across midcourt, O4 and O5 step out to set an on-ball screen. O1 has the option to use either screener (in our diagram, he is going to his … [Read more...]

Point Guard Screen Play

By Jeff Osterman

Great Results Team Building

Run this play against a zone defense to get a 3-point attempt from the corner. As you can see from the diagrams below, the point guard is screened to receive the pass and create an opening for the shooting guard to attempt the shot. 1 passes to 3 on the wing and cuts to the ballside block. 4 pops out to corner and receives pass from 3. 4 screens outside of zone for 1 to cut to corner. 1 dribbles to bring out bottom of zone. 2 runs baseline for one more pass and the shot!   … [Read more...]

High-Low Pick and Roll Pop Play

By Hoops U.

This play utilizes an on-ball screen from the wing that gives the ballhandler options to score and/or pass the basketball. The screener, by reading the defense, can opt to pick and roll or pop back out for the jump shot or 3-pointer. To initiate the High/Low Pick and Roll Pop, O1 dribbles toward the wing and passes to O2. He follows his pass and cuts through to the ballside corner. As O1 clears, O4 steps out to set an on-ball screen for O2. O2 uses the screen to look for his own shot or … [Read more...]

Fresno Screen Option Play

By Jeff Osterman

To Be a Great Teammate – Identify Your Role

This quick hitter gives the potential shooter the option of which direction to cut off of a screen or staggered screen in order to get open for the jump shot. Also a nice basketball play when you want to get your point guard a shot. Players set up as shown. As O1 brings the ball toward the top, he passes to O2 on the wing. O4 comes up from the weakside low block and sets a backscreen for O1. O2 dribbles the ball back to the top of the key area. Note: This play can be run to either side. The … [Read more...]

Point Lob Play

By Hoops U.

The Attitude of the Defender

Get a quick and easy basket with this lob play from the top. Your point guard can receive the lob or another player can easily be moved into the lob position. O2 cuts to the wing and receives the pass from O1. O5 flashes to the opposite low block, replacing O2. O4 steps up to set a screen for O1. O1 sets up his defender and cuts to the basket for a lob pass from O2. If O3's defender has over-helped on O1's cut, O2 can look to make a skip pass to O3. If O1 was not open for the lob pass, O4 … [Read more...]

Misdirection for 3

By Hoops U.

Utilize this misdirection play when you need a 3-pointer for a last second shot. Also a good quick hitter to open up your point guard for an open shot attempt. This play starts as O1 dribbles toward O2 on the wing. O1 and O2 execute a dribble handoff. As O2 receives the handoff, he continues to the left for a dribble or two. O5, who is hanging around between the three-point line and lane now sets a flare screen for O1. At the same time, O3 cuts hard to the basket and then pops back out by … [Read more...]

Around the Horn Box Set Play

By Hoops U.

The Around the Horn Box Set Play is a quick hitter that creates an open shot or scoring opportunity by giving one player, the point guard, a screen from each of the other four players. Timing is essential in this play but if it's executed correctly, you will find yourself with an open jump shot -- or better yet, an open layup! As the point guard, O1, dribbles up the floor and nears the top of the key, he passes to 3, who has popped out from his spot on the elbow. If 3's defender tries playing … [Read more...]
