This is a series of inbounds plays out of a ball side elbow stack and backside flat look. I call it “Boston” because one of the sets came from watching the Celtics and another came from watching Boston College. It just made sense! The first three sets we ran this year at the B-Squad (Sophomore) level with success. The others are sets that I came up with and would run in the future. I think it's important to have a few sets out of the same look because it allows you to hide what you are trying … [Read more...]
Starting a Basketball Coaching Round Table
What is a Coaching Round Table? A number of years ago I heard about a coach in Illinois who got a bunch of coaches together to talk hoops. I thought it was a great idea so I copied it and the Twin Cities Round Table was born. All during the spring and summer of 2013 a group of us got together and talked about a variety of topics from attacking zones to handling players. It was a very informative experience – even more informative than most clinics I've been to. This is true for several reasons. … [Read more...]
Layered 4-Out Motion Offense
This is a version of the motion offense that I use and really like. Breaking the motion offense down into pieces of "layers" makes it easier to understand. This version of the 4-out, 1-in motion also emphasizes actions that get the ball inside against the defense. The motion offense has a cutting, driving, and screening component that should be present in any good offense. 1-4 High Ball Screen Series
Introduction This summer, my goal is to become a better set play coach. Sets are one of my weaknesses offensively, so I am trying to make it a strength. One of the great things about sets is that you can control who has the ball as well as who's taking the shots and where they are taking them from. I was recently watching “Sets to Get Your Best Players Shots” by Paul McDonald (Vermilion Community College). One of the sets he ran got my brain thinking about how you could run this as a … [Read more...]
Giving Your Post Options to Enhance Your Side Ball Screen Action
Introduction The side ball screen has become a very popular action in today's game (for me, it's even over used). Many teams are doing the side ball screen in the swing, motion, secondary, sets, and every other imaginable offense. As more and more teams use this, you need to have some wrinkles to use when teams wise up and start to defend it by using defensive looks such at Coach Tony Barone's “Blue” where the post drops to the block and the player on the ball pushes the dribble back to the … [Read more...]
Using the Dribble-Drive to Enhance Your Offense
Introduction Why Coaches Hate the Dribble but Need to Embrace It I've seen a lot of coaches who absolutely HATE the dribble and I don't disagree that over dribbling is an issue. The problem, however, isn't the dribble itself but how the dribble is used. The problem is that many players don't know how to use the dribble correctly. They dribble the ball east and west, put it between their legs 45 times, and really don't go anywhere. Or they take the dreaded one dribble pick up. These uses of … [Read more...]
