Boston BLOB Play Series

By John Carrier

This is a series of inbounds plays out of a ball side elbow stack and backside flat look. I call it “Boston” because one of the sets came from watching the Celtics and another came from watching Boston College. It just made sense! The first three sets we ran this year at the B-Squad (Sophomore) level with success. The others are sets that I came up with and would run in the future. I think it's important to have a few sets out of the same look because it allows you to hide what you are trying … [Read more...]

Double Quick 3 Inbounds Play

By Hoops U.

This play is designed to generate a quick jump shot for a three-point attempt. Best against a man-to-man, it can also be run against a zone defense. O4, O2 and O5 set up at the free throw line. O3 starts on the ballside low block. When the official hands the ball to O1, O3 cuts to an open area on the ballside wing. On the pass from O1 to O3, O4 and O5 step into the lane, forming a double screen for O2. O2 steps back to the top of the key. O3 passes to O2 for a jump shot. NOTE: … [Read more...]

Elbow Double Stack Out of Bounds Play

By Hoops U.

From a doublestack formation at the elbow areas, inside and outside scoring options are both created. Players line up in a double stack formation at the elbows. When the official hands the basketball to O3, O1 and O4 step into the lane and set a doublescreen for O2 who cuts off the screen and out to the three-point line. At the same time, O4 flashes to opposite short corner / corner area. Following the screen, O5 rolls to the basket and O1 steps out high to become the safety … [Read more...]

Box Up Diagonal Play

By Hoops U.

From the box set, this out of bounds play gives the inbounds passer options of passing to each teammate. The main goal, however, is a screen-the-screener action to create a layup. When the official hands the basketball to O1, O5 sets an upscreen for O2 who cuts out to the weakside corner. O4 steps into the lane to set a diagonal screen for O5. O5 uses the screen and dives toward the ballside low block. O4 rolls off his screen to weakside low block area. O3 pops out to the ballside … [Read more...]

Triangle Backpick Play

By Hoops U.

The Triangle Backpick baseline out-of-bounds play works quite well against a man-to-man defense. From a triangle set, a backpick and roll is utilized to get an easy layup opportunity. The players set up in a triangle set, as shown in the diagram. When the official hands the basketball to O2, O3 cuts to the corner and O5 sets a backpick for O4 and rolls opposite to the basket. O1 slides over to the wing area. Note: O4 can use the backpick and go either way to the basket. O5 will roll opposite … [Read more...]

Pacific

By Jeff Osterman

Pacific is a baseline out of bounds play that gets the basketball to the top and then sets up a scoring opportunity with a pick-and-roll play. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. When the official hands the basketball to O2, O3 dives to the weakside low block while O1 performs a v-cut to get open. Obviously the pass can be made to O3, but that defender would have to be completely asleep for that to be open (though it does happen, doesn't it?!). O2 makes the pass to O1 and then … [Read more...]

3 V-Formation Inbounds Plays

By Hoops U.

The V-Formation is advantageous in that it spreads the defense and creates open cutting and passing lanes. Option 1: Doublecross O1 and O2 cross and cut to opposite corners / short corners. O2 goes first. O3 and O4 cross and cut down opposite sides of the lane. O4 cuts first. O3 should be open but O5 can make the pass to whoever is open. Option 2: Double Screen O1 and O2 move shoulder to shoulder at the free throw line as O3 cuts toward the ball and receives the pass from O5. O3 must be … [Read more...]

1-4 Cross Screen

By Hoops U.

This out of bounds from a 1-4 set works especially well against teams that look to tightly guard the offensive players. The inbounds passer has 3 potential passes for scoring options, as well as the safety valve. You might find this to be a less effective scoring play if the defense sags off, thereby taking away the cuts to the basket. In a 1-4 out of bounds set, the players position themselves in a 1-4 set, as shown, while the inbounder takes that ball out from the baseline. When the … [Read more...]

Spin Off Around Inbounds Play

By Hoops U.

'Spin Off Around' is a simple baseline out of bounds play to learn and run and it can be utilized against both man-to-man and zone defenses. If the initial cuts don't create an open shot, the reversal option against a zone surely will! When the official hands the basketball to O1, O5 posts his defender and then spins into the lane looking for a pass from O1. At the same time, the weakside player in the line at the free throw area (in this diagram, O4) cuts over the top of the line and … [Read more...]

Baseline Clear

By Hoops U.

This inbounds play can be run against either a man-to-man or zone defense, however, it will probably be most effective against a man-to-man because of the initial cut clearing out the space near the basket. When the official hands the ball to O1, O5 clears out the layup slot on the ballside by cutting hard to the corner. As O5 makes his cut, O2 cuts off of O3 and into the open area. If open, O1 makes the pass to O2. If the pass isn't available, O2 will slide toward the short corner or … [Read more...]
