4-Low Pass to Passer Play

By Michael Lang

This baseline inbounds play works well against a man-to-man defense. It's simple to run with an easy inbounds pass and a screen that will create an great scoring opportunity right at the hoop. When the official hands the basketball to O3, O5 slides high to receive the pass from O3. O3's pass will probably have to be thrown over the defender, with O5 essentially sealing him off. After passing, O3 takes a couple of hard steps towards the sideline area while O4 moves over to set a … [Read more...]

4-Across Tight Triple Play

By Hoops U.

This out-of-bounds formation can be used in a variety of ways. It is simple, yet not often seen on the basketball court ... therefore it can be very advantageous. In this 4-Across Tight play, the ball is inbounded and then returned to the passer after he cuts past 3 teammates. It's simple to execute and can create an open jump shot or 3-pointer. We'll hit this 4-across tight formation in future diagrams as well. Players line up as shown; O1 is the inbounds passer and players 2-5 form a … [Read more...]

Double Screen Away and Pop Play

By Hoops U.

This is a nice baseline out of bounds play designed to get something going at the basket for an up-close scoring opportunity. A simple double screen with players popping back to the ball makes this play easy to run at any and all levels of play. When the official hands the basketball to O2, O4 and O5 set a double screen for O3. O3 comes off the screen and cuts to the ball side block. O5 pops to weak side short corner area and O4 steps down the middle to the ball. O2 has the option of … [Read more...]

1-4 Cross Screen

By Hoops U.

This out of bounds from a 1-4 set works especially well against teams that look to tightly guard the offensive players. The inbounds passer has 3 potential passes for scoring options, as well as the safety valve. You might find this to be a less effective scoring play if the defense sags off, thereby taking away the cuts to the basket. In a 1-4 out of bounds set, the players position themselves in a 1-4 set, as shown, while the inbounder takes that ball out from the baseline. When the … [Read more...]

4 Low Strong Dives Play

By Hoops U.

From a 4-across inbounds formation, this play creates great scoring chances by opening up space for a player to dive hard to the basket, a cut off of a screen, and a pop out for a deep jumper. O1 inbounds the basketball and the other four players set up in a flat formation on the baseline. When the official hands the ball to O1, O4 steps toward the basket to receive the ball from O1 and then cuts out beyond the three-point line. O2 makes the same cut on the other side of the lane. O1 passes … [Read more...]

4-Across Stagger Curl

By Hoops U.

From the 4-across set, this baseline out of bounds play creates a shot opportunity right in the heart of the defense. When the official hands the ball to O3, O4 pops out to the top as O3 lobs a pass to him. O4 is essentially posting up for a lob pass while keeping his defender away from the ball. After passing the basketball, O3 cuts hard to the weak side and curls around a staggered screen set by O5 and O2. O4 looks to make the pass to O3 in the lane. O3 can take the shot or take a dribble … [Read more...]
