1-4 Elbow Play

By Jeff Osterman

'Elbow' from the 1-4 high set is designed to get a jump shot from the elbow area. A few cuts and screens also create other potential scoring options. O1 enters to O3 on the wing and cuts through to ballside corner. O4 screens away for O2. O5 sets an on-ball screen for O3 and then sets a downscreen for O1. O3 uses the on-ball screen and looks to penetrate and get a jumper from the elbow area. If help is lacking, he may be able to get deep into the lane or go all the way to the basket. If … [Read more...]

The players set up in a 1-4 High Set as shown. 1 passes to 2 on the wing. 5 & 3 set a staggered flare screen for 1. 3 pops to the top for ball reversal. 2 can pass to 3 if open off the flare screen. 2 can also drive baseline which may be available if his defender overhelps in the middle. 2 passes to 3 at the top 3 passes to 1 on the wing and runs inside cut to the corner 1 can look for 3 … [Read more...]

1-4 Wings Through Screen Option

By Jeff Osterman

This is a nice quick hitter from the 1-4 high set because it gives the shooter two screen options with which to choose. It's also a good way to enter into your normal motion offensive system. The players set up in a 1-4 high set as shown. O2 goes over or under O5 and cuts to the opposite wing. O5 dives to the low block. O3 clears through to the opposite corner. O1 makes the pass to O2 on the wing. O4 clears out to the ballside corner. O3 has the option of making a flex cut off of O5's … [Read more...]

Gray 1-4 Play

By Hoops U.

The 'Gray' 1-4 Play utilizes several screen actions to create an open shot possibility for multiple players. With the screens being set, this play also creates chances for 3-point shot attempts, which is great if that is what you need or want at the time this is called. The players begin in a 1-4 set as shown in the diagram. 2 cuts backdoor as 1 passes to 3 on the wing. After passing, 1 curls around 5 to the opposite wing. 5 pops out to the top of the key area. 3 returns the ball to the top … [Read more...]

1-4 Blue Devil Handoff Play

By Hoops U.

This play from the 1-4 high set was executed to perfection by the Duke Blue Devils in their comeback win against UNC on February 9, 2010. A 3-point shot was converted by Seth Curry while Duke was working their comeback from a 16-point deficit. The 1-4 Blue Devil Handoff play starts with the players in a 1-4 high set as shown in the diagram. O1 has the ball on the right side of the court. O3, on the right wing, cuts through the lane to the weakside. O4 steps out from his position at the elbow … [Read more...]

1-4 Low Drive Play

By Hoops U.

Double Stack Low

The 1-4 Low Drive Play is a simple to run and very effective if you have a point guard that is good in a 1-on-1 situation. O1 begins at the top while the other four players are spread along the baseline. O1 dribbles on his defender to either the right or left side. In this diagram, O1 dribbles to the right. O3 moves to get open for a potential pass and three-point shot. O2 cuts to the top to replace O1. O5, upon seeing O1 drive in his direction, steps out to the short corner. Stepping out … [Read more...]

1-4 Low Middle Stagger Play

By Hoops U.

Flex Offense

Get an open 3-point shot with this play out of the 1-4 low alignment. Also a great play that can be used to attack the lane with a middle drive. O1 dribbles the ball up the side (left side in this diagram, but either side will work). The other players align themselves in a 1-4 low set. As O1 dribbles across the top of the key extended, O5 will set an on-ball screen for him. O1 drives into the middle of the floor. O4 slides into the low post. O1 may have a shot from the lane or a dump pass … [Read more...]

1-4 Short, Long, or Lob Options Play

By Hoops U.

This quick hitter from the 1-4 set has three great scoring options. There are two possible layups and one three-point shot option. In the first option, O1 dribbles off a high screen set by O5 while O2 dives to the low block. As soon as O1 reaches the wing area, O2 goes up and sets a diagonal back screen for O4. O1 could make the pass to O4 for a layup. This is the first option. As O2 sets the back screen, O5 slides down and screens for O2. O1 can pass to O2 for a three-point shot. This is … [Read more...]

Pick and Roll, Pick and Roll

By Hoops U.

No, I am not stuttering by naming this the 'Pick and Roll, Pick and Roll'! This quick hitter from the 1-4 set incorporates a staggered pick and roll for multiple scoring opportunities. This is an effective man-to-man basketball set play that utilizes a staggered double screen to isolate a player for dribble penetration and a layup/jump shot or to create a scoring opportunity for the screener. The play begins with O1 passing the basketball to O2 on the right wing. After passing, O1 cuts … [Read more...]

1-4 Low Pick and Roll with Backscreen

By Hoops U.

This 1-4 set puts four players down low to run a pick and roll with an added backscreen for creating a great scoring opportunity. To run this play out of a 1-4 low alignment, O1 dribbles the ball to the side wing area. Either side works just fine so if the play is called, all players should know what to do from any position. This play can create several open shot opportunities depending upon how the defense plays it. As O1 reaches the free throw line extended, O5 comes up and sets an on-ball … [Read more...]
