Silver

By Zach Keene

This quick hitter utilizes some screening and cutting action to keep the defense active. We like to run this play out of a dead ball situation. We will look to run this on a dead ball situation. We are looking for the (5) to pop out and receive a pass from (1). (1) will then look to cut through the lane and run through to the left wing. (3) will look to exchange with (1) around the block area. (4) will then look to pop out to outside of the 3-point line and receive a pass from (5). After (5) … [Read more...]

Evansville

By Jeff Osterman

'Evansville' is a quick hitter that utilizes a flare screen to create an open 3-point shot attempt. If the 3-pointer is not available, there is an additional screen-the-screener action which can create multiple shot opportunities. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. O5 breaks hard from the ballside low block to the top weakside wing area and receives the pass from O1. O3 cuts down to replace O5 on the low block. O1 takes a few hard steps as though running a give-and-go down the … [Read more...]

Triple Post Play

By Hoops U.

Triple Post Play is a simple set play that utilizes a triple screen to open up a shooter from the foul line area. A second option is also available that can create a nice scoring opportunity from the low post. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. The point guard, O1, brings the ball down the court, passes to O2 on the wing and then moves down to form the top of the triple screen for O3. O3 sets up his defender with a v-cut and then comes off the triple screen to the foul line … [Read more...]

Double High Pick and Roll Swing Low

By Hoops U.

This basketball play was executed by the Miami Heat during their series-clinching game 5 win of the 2012 NBA Finals. In the Heat version, LeBron James was able to cut to the low block and score on a layup. O4 and O5 set a double high pick-and-roll for O1. O1, instead of using either screen, swings the ball over to O2. On the pass to O2, O3 makes a backdoor cut to the low block. O2 makes the pass to O3 for the layup. Coaching Points: O4 and O5 must sell the picks and O1 must sell that he is … [Read more...]

Loop Play

By Jeff Osterman

'Loop' creates an open driving lane for an short jumper / layup or for a kick-out pass. A defense will be hard-pressed to defend this play because of the variety of screens, cuts, and ball reversals. The players set up as shown in the above diagram as O1 brings the ball across halfcourt. O1 will pass ahead to O2 on the wing (O2 may need to execute a v-cut to get open). After passing, O1 cuts toward the basket but as he reaches the elbow area, he breaks to the ballside corner. After O1 has … [Read more...]

Point Lob Play

By Hoops U.

The Attitude of the Defender

Get a quick and easy basket with this lob play from the top. Your point guard can receive the lob or another player can easily be moved into the lob position. O2 cuts to the wing and receives the pass from O1. O5 flashes to the opposite low block, replacing O2. O4 steps up to set a screen for O1. O1 sets up his defender and cuts to the basket for a lob pass from O2. If O3's defender has over-helped on O1's cut, O2 can look to make a skip pass to O3. If O1 was not open for the lob pass, O4 … [Read more...]

Elon

By Jeff Osterman

'Elon' is a quick hitter that can be effective against a zone such as the 2-3 as well as against man-to-man defenses. The players start out as shown, with the 2 post players forming a double stack on the low block. O1 passes to O2 on the wing while O3 cuts through to the ballside corner, using O4 and O5 as a double screen. After passing to O3, O2 clears through the lane to the weakside wing. O5 dives to the short corner. O3 could shoot if open upon receiving the pass. He may also look … [Read more...]

Misdirection for 3

By Hoops U.

Utilize this misdirection play when you need a 3-pointer for a last second shot. Also a good quick hitter to open up your point guard for an open shot attempt. This play starts as O1 dribbles toward O2 on the wing. O1 and O2 execute a dribble handoff. As O2 receives the handoff, he continues to the left for a dribble or two. O5, who is hanging around between the three-point line and lane now sets a flare screen for O1. At the same time, O3 cuts hard to the basket and then pops back out by … [Read more...]

Denver

By Jeff Osterman

This set play is effective at using some misdirection to create an open shot opportunity. 'Denver' starts out with the players in positions as shown in the diagram above. As O1 dribbles the ball into the frontcourt, O4 flashes from the low block to the high post/elbow area. After making the pass, O1 cuts down to the opposite corner. O4, upon receiving the pass, dribbles toward O3 to execute a dribble handoff. O3 receives the handoff and dribbles to the top / middle of the floor. O4, after … [Read more...]

Magic

By Jeff Osterman

The 'Magic' quick hitting basketball play incorporates a staggered screen, a staggered on-ball screen, and a few cuts/rolls to create open scoring opportunities. The players set up as shown. As O1 brings the ball upcourt, O2 cuts through and clears to the opposite corner. As O2 is cutting, O4 and O5 move to set a staggered screen for O3. O3 curls around the screen to the wing vacated by O2. If O3 is open, O1 can pass the ball. O3 may have a shot or drive opportunity. If O3 isn't available, … [Read more...]
