James Madison Double Stack Quick Hitter

By Jeff Osterman

From a low double stack formation, this is a nice play that incorporates your center. Your big will set a couple of screens and ultimately work the low post for own shot opportunity. 3 rubs off 2 and 5 and pops out to the wing. 2 rubs off 5. 4 sets a cross screen for 2. 2 comes off the cross screen to the right wing. 1 passes to 3. 5 sets a backscreen for 1. 1 cuts off the backscreen to the basket. If open, 3 makes the pass to 1 for the layup. 5 sets a ballscreen for 3. 3 dribbles … [Read more...]

Maccabi Zipper Pick and Roll Play

By Steve Hardin

This pick-and-roll play from the top creates a penetration lane for an easy scoring opportunity along with a high-low option if the pick-and-roll is defended well. Players set as shown in the diagram. Play can be run to either side. As O1 dribbles to the right wing, O4 cuts to the ballside corner to screen for O2 and O5 slides over to replace O4. O1 swings the basketball over to O2, who is now at the top. O5 steps over to run the pick-and-roll with O2. O2 uses the screen to … [Read more...]

Ballscreen Dribble Drive Kick Out Play

By Hoops U.

This play is designed to get a quick shot attempt. It might be most useful in end-of-game situations where a quick 3-pointer is wanted but a 2-pointer is okay as well. The players set up with a good three-point shooter in each corner and two good screeners at the elbow area. The point guard is bringing the basketball upcourt. As O1 brings it across midcourt, O4 and O5 step out to set an on-ball screen. O1 has the option to use either screener (in our diagram, he is going to his … [Read more...]

Backscreen Quick Flash Post-Up Play

By Hoops U.

This play is designed to get a quick low post scoring option. Simple enough to run at all levels, this quick post-up set can be an easy way to take advantage of a possible mismatch. If you have a player who can score in the low post and he is being guarded by a weak defender, this play can get him open for a nice scoring opportunity. The play can be run to either side, especially if both of your wing players are capable in the low post. When this play is called, the side is determined by … [Read more...]

Kansas State Dribble Handoff Play

By Jeff Osterman

This quick hitter utilizes a dribble handoff to create space and gives the ball handler multiple opportunities to score or pass to an open teammate. The point guard, O1, starts by dribbling to the left. O4 pops out to the top and receives the pass from O1. After passing, O1 continues to the left and sets a screen for O3. O3 continues his cut across the top and executes a dribble handoff with O4. O2 dives down to the low block. O3 can certainly attack or shoot if open … [Read more...]

Flex Point Lob Play

By Hoops U.

This quick hitter, from former Miami (Ohio) coach Charlies Coles, goes well within a flex offense but it can be run no matter type of offense you employ. A fine play from a great coach. RIP Coach Coles. O1 dribbles to either side (in our diagram, he goes right). O1 then passes to O4 who has cut from low block to elbow / top area. As in a normal flex offense, on the pass to O4, O2 makes a flex cut to the opposite low block. With this play, however, instead of O1 screening down for O5, … [Read more...]

Troy Double Screens Quick Hitter

By Jeff Osterman

This is a quick hitter that can even be run from a secondary fast break. The inclusion of 3 separate double screens creates many scoring options. As the play begins, O1 has the basketball on the left side of the court. The initial placement of O1 means this can be run as he brings the basketball up along the side (of course, this play can be run to either side. O1 dribbles to the right and uses a double on-ball screen from O4 and O5. The wing players, O2 and O3 dive towards their … [Read more...]

Triple Double Play

By Hoops U.

This is called 'Triple Double' because it includes 3 double screens throughout the entire play. This is a nice play with multiple scoring opportunities that can give defenses fits. The players set as shown with a low double stack on one side. Play can be run to either side with our diagram showing it to the right. O1 dribbles to the right side as O3 comes off the doublescreen being set by O4 and O5. If open, O3 should take the shot. O1 and O2 then set a doublescreen for O4, who cuts to the … [Read more...]

Old Dominion Corner Pick-and-Pop

By Jeff Osterman

This is a nice basketball play that gets the ball to the corner and then utilizes a pick and pop for a couple of possible scoring options. The players set up as shown and the play is initiated with the pass from O1 to O3 on the wing. O2 cuts through to the now ballside corner and O4 flashes to the high post. O3 passes to O2 in the corner and then cuts through to the opposite corner. You'll also notice that after O1 passed to the O3, he fades to the opposite wing. This will help to clear his … [Read more...]

Quick Backdoor Play

By Hoops U.

The Quick Backdoor Play is a quick hitting basketball play that is especially useful against teams that pressure and/or overplay on defense. Utilizing this quick play helps keep defenses honest and forces them to make snap-quick decisions. This play can certainly be set and run at any time, however, I think it is most effective to run immediately as bring the ball into the frontcourt. As the point guard, O1, brings the ball up the court, he should not be directly in the middle. He should … [Read more...]
