High-Low Pick and Roll Pop Play

By Hoops U.

This play utilizes an on-ball screen from the wing that gives the ballhandler options to score and/or pass the basketball. The screener, by reading the defense, can opt to pick and roll or pop back out for the jump shot or 3-pointer. To initiate the High/Low Pick and Roll Pop, O1 dribbles toward the wing and passes to O2. He follows his pass and cuts through to the ballside corner. As O1 clears, O4 steps out to set an on-ball screen for O2. O2 uses the screen to look for his own shot or … [Read more...]

Fresno Screen Option Play

By Jeff Osterman

To Be a Great Teammate – Identify Your Role

This quick hitter gives the potential shooter the option of which direction to cut off of a screen or staggered screen in order to get open for the jump shot. Also a nice basketball play when you want to get your point guard a shot. Players set up as shown. As O1 brings the ball toward the top, he passes to O2 on the wing. O4 comes up from the weakside low block and sets a backscreen for O1. O2 dribbles the ball back to the top of the key area. Note: This play can be run to either side. The … [Read more...]

Marist 3-Point Play

By Jeff Osterman

This set play is essentially designed to get a 3-point shot. There are a couple of opportunities with the best chance coming off of a ball reversal and staggered or double screen. This might be the play you need when you need a '3'. 2 pops to corner and receives pass from 1. 1 cuts behind 4. If open, 2 can take the shot. 3 pops and receives pass from 2. Probably not open for shot, but might be available. Most likely, 3 should quickly reverse the basketball to 1, who is popping out from the … [Read more...]

Croatia 2-Up Pick-and-Roll Play

By Steve Hardin

There is a lot of action in this play, including a backscreen and staggered screen which culminate in a pick-and-roll scoring option. With O1 at the top right, the weakside high post flashes top to receive the pass from O1. O5 steps up and sets a backscreen for O1. If open, O4 can hit O1 with the pass. If O1 was not open on that initial cut, O4 will swing the basketball back to O5. O2 will then cut to the top off of a staggered screen set by O1 and O4. O5 reverses the basketball back to … [Read more...]

Howard Handoff Pick and Roll Play

By Jeff Osterman

Pressure Basketball by Jack Ramsay

This quick hitter utilizes a dribble handoff into a pick and roll to create a great scoring chance. As O1 brings the ball upcourt, O3 slides up from the corner. O1 and O3 execute a dribble handoff maneuver. As O1 and O3 execute the dribble handoff, O5 flashes up to set an on-ball screen for O3. O3 uses the screen to attack the lane. O5 rolls to the basket after setting the screen. O3 may have the shot, the pass to O5, or the kick out pass to O1 (as shown in the diagram). If nothing … [Read more...]

Double Screen Flare 3

By Hoops U.

Double Screen Flare 3 is a quick hitter designed to get a 3-point shot attempt. It can be used from your halfcourt set or it can be quite effective from your secondary break. Players start as shown. If run out of secondary break, O5 is trailing play while O1 dribbles across midcourt. O1 passes to O2 on the wing and breaks as if cutting to the basket. O3 and O5 slide over to set a doublescreen for O1. O1 cuts back, using the doublescreen to flare to opposite wing. O2 skips the basketball to O1 … [Read more...]

Eastern Illinois

By Jeff Osterman

This quick hitter is a scoring set that creates opportunities by utilizing an on-ball screen, flex screen, and downscreen. The multiple screens and cuts makes this difficult to defend. As you will see, there are also multiple opportunities throughout the play to get a good shot attempt. The players start as shown in the above diagram. O4 sets a downscreen for O3 and then slides out to the wing. O3 looks to receive the pass from O1 at the top. O5 sets a backscreen for O1 who cuts through to … [Read more...]

St. Louis

By Jeff Osterman

This quick hitter uses some weakside action after a ball reversal to create a couple of potential scoring options. The players set up as shown in the above diagram. O1 passes to O3 on the wing and then cuts through to the ballside corner. O4 flashes to top of key for ball reversal. O3 passes the basketball to O4 at the top who reverses it to O2 on the wing. O5 sets a diagonal screen for O3 who cuts through to ballside low block area. O2 can make the pass to O3 if open. If O3 wasn't open … [Read more...]

Barcelona Side Pick-and-Roll Play

By Steve Hardin

This quick hitter incorporates several screens and cuts to ultimately create a pick-and-roll from the wing area. This is a great play that allows the point guard to attack the heart of the defense via the pick and roll. O1 passes the basketball to O3 on the wing and then cuts through to the ballside low post. O2 uses a staggered screen set by O4 and O5 and cuts hard to the top of the key. O3 passes to O2 at the top and then cuts off of a backscreen from O1. O3 will ultimately clear through … [Read more...]

Dribble Play (1 Finger Down)

By Zach Keene

This play works great directly out of your secondary break. It's a quick hitter that can be run anytime, but executes quite well out of your transition offense. We will look to run this directly out of our secondary fast break. It can be initiated by either calling it out, pointing to the spot where the point guard wants the screen to be set (1 finger down) or by simply dribbling directly at the 4. 4 will come over and set a pick for 1 equal to where the lane begins. 1 will look to turn the … [Read more...]
